A naturally aspirated engine looses around 10% Power for every 3000ft of elevation.
Modern ones even more then old ones because of emissions.

I currently get ~13.5 MPG unloaded mixed driving and ~8 when towing in my current Ford 6.2 Gasser. Anything better than that is an improvement, but I am doubtful.

I just filled up my truck today and I had 15.4 MPG hand calculated mixed driving in town and on country roads. My last fill up was 15.7 MPG. When towing my wind anchor, a 13.5 tall fifth wheel, I uasuslly get between 10.0 and 11.5 MPG. This too is hand calculated. I have a 12 year spread sheet of my fuel mileage with my 2008 Dodge Mega Cab 6.7 L Cummins with the 68RFE auto.
I can't prove it but I have read we're the newer Ram trucks are getting better fuel mileage then I am getting!

snadamo,
Based on your desire to some day move up to a 5th wheel I'd highly recommend a SRW 3500. I sort of missed the mark by purchasing a 2500 which I really like but it has very limited 5th wheel capability as the rear suspension being coil springs reduces its cargo capacity.

Thanks for your feedback!
I am having two different thoughts on this lately:

1. Get a 2500 now and keep it until current trailer does not fit families needs (estimated max ~5 years). Trade up for 3500 and new TT/5er at that time. this option is more cost effective, but riskier because with TWO different trucks to vet out.

2. Get a 3500 now and keep it even longer term/futureproof myself. Additionally, I am not sure how my 5 year plan will work out. We are still in the growing stages of our family, so who knows. This plan is more expensive, but reduces the risk of only having to vet out one truck.

I MAY even be willing to bend on the laramie requirement. From what I have seen, and need to confirm, some SLT/Big Horns that have all the same features i want; less leather and cooled seats (which in AZ I love). However, I don't want to compromise and regret...you know...like I did with my current truck
