I've been reading the latest posts about modifying stock fuel plates and after looking at as many pictures of cam profiles as I could find I decided I couldn't do much harm by whittling down the stock plate on my P pumped 12 valver.

I had been running the stock plate all the way forward and the AFC cover forward also with the starwheel in the stock position. Slightly more power in the low rpm ranges than stock with a considerable belch of black smoke if I pressed the pedal any more than absolutely necessary to get the truck moving. Once the turbo spooled up I could reasonably control the smoke output with my right foot. The motor defueled rather quickly and was slightly less anemic than stock :( . EGT's never went over 800. Max boost approached 32 psi in OD @ wot.

Chose a profile similar to a #10 with a rounded "foot" about 1/8" tall tapering quickly to 1/4" and using the rounded edge of the grinding wheel blended the rest of the curve to about . 060 above the flat portion continuing up to the top of the cam. Polished the grinder marks off with some 80 grit wetordry followed up by 220 and finished with 400 and buffed to a shine.

Installed the plate all the way forward and set the afc housing back on in the mid (stock) position.

Yowza!!! :D :D :D Major difference in torque and useable rpm. Less smoke off idle--I attrubute that to the neutral afc housing--and it gets on the governor real quick in second and third with some nice smokey (black haze) push ya back in the seat pulls in fourth and fifth all the way up to as fast as I want to go in a 4x4 with stock brakes and suspension. Gentlemen I am truly impressed. After a couple of quick full throttle shifts in the peak of the power band I noticed the clutch starting to sound more like an unlocked torque converter so I pretty much have my next mod lined up for me. :-laf

After the clutch i figure a GSK and afc spring kit would be in order. Oh yeah i need to verify/reset the timing also. Further mods would be a set of Formula one mach 2's and delivery valves. By then I should be needing a larger turbo. As of now I am at 1100 deg. pre turbo and hitting a solid 37lbs of boost. Oo.

This is a blast!!!

I have been Bit!

So to anyone considering gathering up the grapes to cut your own plate I say go for it. Unfortunately I didn't take any pic's but if anyone needs a rough sketch of the profile send me a pm and I'll send ya my best artist's rendition :-laf

I would be interested in that sketch, thanks. I'm going to grind one as soon as I get another plate. I want to keep my original the way it is for a backup.

37 psi is pretty good. Do you have the wastgate disabled, or a boost controler?

Heres a primitive drawing :-laf of the plate profile. Worked for me--Clamped the plate in vise grips and went at it! On edit--have boost elbow-- will slip stock clutch :D

The 1/4" in the drawing ... is that "past" the vertical on top?

Forrest--the 1/4" is the height (appx) of the heel vs the toe of the curve. The radius is indented from the verticle line. I figured if it was too much I could always pull the plate back. So far it's unnecessary to do so. Nice power curve! roll into it and it pulls like stink Oo.

Know nothin about the engine but want to learn, she has a single 5" stack straight piped, and a john deere fillter retro fitted I stole from the barn, 8 x 10" long barrel filter :) been looking at banks get kits don't know if it will be a good choice need help I'm a big greenhorn!

yes but not any good ones, i cant scan them right now.

KMahnke, what did you use to cut your plate with? a dremel or a big grinder? im doing the same to mine but a little more agressive.

41Jay, Don't waste your money on Banks products. You can get a lot more power for less money if you just read the boards here. . take it from someone who has been there done that... the wife thought she was helping. . and she did. . got the bombing bug so be careful it bites...

Mjoppie--hit it with a 6" grinding wheel. Came at it at the angle in the illustration. Clamped it in a pair of vice grips and held the plate against the rest on the grinder. Took it slow so as not to blue the plate and went over the rough stuff with progressively finer wetordry paper starting with 80 grit. Take your time --you can always remove more material--to a point--if you arent happy with the results. Try the plate all the way forward first. You can always slide it back for less fuel.

add one more to the homeground plate club. did mine tonight just like the pic but i didnt grind in the middle. i think its the same as the 100 plate. i used a 6" bench grinder to start a cleaned it up with a finer grit wheel on the end of my drill. pretty fun but need a gsk. Oo.
