2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Horn Blows and Don't

Here is a run down of what I do know about the truck.

I have a 1994, 2500 4x4, 5. 9 I6, 4 spedd auto w/47rh.

But when it comes to my pump, turbo I know it is all stock (for now) but I also need to know what I have so that I will know what I need/want. ie, power boost, turbo whistle increase...

Also I now have 205K miles with frequent oil changes. I know previous owner was maticulous (found his service log) but @ over 200k miles now what should I replace, adjust, or remove.

Any info will be appreciated.

Since it's a stock 94 suto, you should have a 160hp motor. You also have the 160hp injectors. The turbo should be an HX-35 with (I think) a 12 cm wastegated exhaust housing.

Before you do any modifications to the truck, I would highly suggest a set of guages. You should get an EGT, boost, and transmission temperature gauge. I am real happy with my Westach combo gauge I bought through Genos Garage.

Second(or first), take care of the KDP(Killer Dowel Pin). If that pin falls out, it will ruin your MONTH. (Trust me on this one, been there)

Unless you add more fuel, you really don't need to increase the boost. You can slide your stock fuel control plate forward and feel a little increase in power. Not sure how many HP with that pump. If you just want to hear the turbo sing a little louder, you can remove the silencer ring on the turbo. It held in by a snap ring just before the turbo blades. If you get an open element filter, it will get even louder.

Here's the tricky part, that transmission does not like the extra power. You may be OK with minor modification, but if you try to put too much power through that transmission, it will display it's displeasure with you by leaving you stranded on the highway somewhere (trust me on this one too, been there several times). Luckily There are multitudes of aftermarket transmission experts out there to choose from.

If you'd like a little hands-on help, I'm only about 5 miles up the road from you and would gladly give you a hand with some of this stuff. You've no doubt seen my Beast running around your area, I'm there all the time.

Take it easy,

Curtis Harris

Let me add a little to what Curtis says.

Get the CPL number off the data plate attached to the gear case on the front of the engine. That indicates the recipe that Cummins used to build the engine. You will need that number for things like timing information.

Check the transmission cooler lines. If they still have the plastic fittings you will want to replace those with metal fittings. If you don't you will have to walk one of these days.

Almost forgot, take the VIN to a dealer and find out if all the recalls have been done. The shock tower recall is especially important.

You hit the nail right on the head...

That is exactly the kind of things that I was wondering about. Im new to all of this but can do anything given the info. Going to set my valves this wknd to celebrate memorial day. Then can do some of the above also. Man what a big help, this site is great. I seriously want to tell everyone I see with a CTD.

I appreciate the offer. May have some questions some day and take you up on it and learn some. You obviously have alot of knowledge to give.

Joe thanks to you too. Got the VIN ran and I have already "walked" on the transmission lines a couple of years ago... assuming they have been replaced will take a peak though.

Very interesting about the CPL number...

do I have the dealer run that also??

P. S. Looking into gauges now. Any local distributors in our area. (Clear Lake, Houston)

Depending on what brand your looking for. I bought mine onver the net at www.genosgarage.com. I do konw some local guys if you'd rather go that route. Just PM me later.

The CPL is the number Cummins will ask for when you buy parts from them. I don't think Dodge uses that number.

I have pretty much the same truck as you. I put in 215 injectors, chopped the muffler, slid the fuel plate forward, turned the star wheel forward and really did not see that much of a differance. It all came togather when I replaced the throttle linkage (the one that has a ball joint on either end) After that it was a totally different truck. The same day I found out that the throttle linkage is a recal item. But for the differance that was felt it was worth a $25 part. Hope this helps you out a little.

cdixon, we'll be meeting at 8:30am Sunday @ the Cracker Barrel- Katy Freeway at the Barker-Cypress exit (out toward Katy Mills Mall).

Why don't you come on out & join us? Bring your questions & we'll do our best to answer them.

i don't know if the auto has been rebuilt, but i recommend upping the line pressures (if the trans is healthy) no matter what performance you are doing (besides a full rebuild of course). even stock it'll prolong the life of the transmission as long the thing isn't dieing/tired already. ~300hp/715tq through a basically stock transmission~

I just turned 250,000 miles on my '94 a couple weeks ago, a week before I turned 321 hp at a dyno run. I'm now running a tweeked 180 hp pump and some other stuff.

I had a #5 TST plate (not the junk they sell on e-bay), 215 injectors, a 3k RPM kit and a 14 cm turbo housing and turned 275 hp last year.

The biggest improvements I made to truck (performance wise) were the torque converter and the injectors. The plate may have made a difference but the TC was so loose I couldn't tell. I swapped the injectors after the TC install.

One more thing, the '94's have the same turbo as the '93 and earlier trucks but with a 12 cm housing. I think it's a WH1C or something like that. The housings for the HX-35 are the same. I sold my 12 housing to a guy with an earlier truck and the 14 housing I had came off a later truck.
