how do you know which is better - side-by-side test?

i got my super b before the phat shafts were out - so i'm going with it (or stuck with it) - i like it and don't have anything bad to say about it

RDietze, see you have the Banks exhaust as do I. Did the Super B bolt right up to it? How hard was it to install, ie. did you have to change or re-route any piping etc. How noisy is it? Same questions for any of you with the Phat Shaft 62?

Would one of these turbos provide any benefit on a truck with just a mild box, intake and exhaust?

Kind of what I've been wondering myself. Or, is there a better "lite" turbo for the mildy BOMB'd truck as Bertram65 was talking about?

f-151,

an ~1" adapter was provided which i used to mate the turbo to the 4" exhaust - it initially wasn't a 100% alignment so i had to muscle the exhaust to get everything to come together. it sounds good! a little (very little) exhaust whistle - nice throaty sound but not obnoxious in the cab. the super b sounds like a turbine on an airline out of the compressor side - the Scotty5 i have enriches this "airliner" sound.

IMO the banks exhaust is the best 4" out there and one of the few banks products that leads in quality and engineering in it's category.

bertram,

if you are not going all out on your 03, you may want to go with piers modified hy-35. it has a bigger compressor wheel, beefier bearings and i think a stronger shaft -- and the price is only around 400 bucks (or less). i think this piersIfied turbo is similar to what the 04. 5s and up use. and i would recommend pt-motorsports.com for the lowest price.

good luck, ron

Aren't they both Schwitzer S300's, just massaged differently?

Yes, they both are based on an S300 Schwitzer/Borg Warner.

The Super B has a 58mm compressor wheel and the Phat Shaft a 62mm compressor wheel.

The Super B comes with a 12cm and the PS can come with either 12 or 14 you specify.

I do believe BD is now marketing a different turbo that incorporates a larger 62mm wheel.

I think Borg Warner actually builds the Super B where as Industrial Injection actually mods and builds the Phat Shaft at their facility (someone correct if I am wrong in this statement).

Thanks,

Will the new turbo or a modified stock turbo improve the performance of the truck? what will I gain by changing?

it will lower egt's, so you can add more fuel. more power comes from fuel. it also breethes better as compared to the tiny 9cm2 hy-35 exhaust housing (less backpressure). the piersIfied turbo should blow more air but the small turbine exhaust housing is untouched

hope this helps

You are correct..... it's modified in house.
