Hi All,
I was going to order some new tires and wheels from Tire Rack so I want to make sure I get this right the first time. I want the XD RockStar wheels :
Size: 17x9
Offset: -12mm
Backspacing: 4. 52"
Bolt Pattern: 8-165
Rec. Tire Size: 265/70-17
Weight: 32. 2lbs.
Finish: Black Painted

with the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO Size: LT285/70R17
Sidewall Style: Raised White Letters
Serv. Desc: 121/118R
Load Range: E

My truck is a 2007. 5 6. 7 4x4 without any lift.

Anyone ever used this combo and do you think it will clear ok?

Thanks,
Dan

I don't believe backspacing is sufficient at 4. 52". Your wheels will stick out well past your fenders, and will probably rub the fenders at the rear of the wheel when turning. My wheels have 5. 65" backspacing, they are larger than the wheels you're looking at, but the problem was there regardless.

Someone with 17" wheels needs to chime in on backspacing requirements, so you do not have these issues. You are spending a chunk of change and do not need an expensive mistake that will be hard to rectify without a loss of $. I may be completely wrong here(up all night), but do not believe so.

Jess.
That's what I'm trying to avoid. I've had 3 Dodge diesels and have never bought aftermarket tires or wheels, so I know nothing about them.
Thanks!

go to a discount tire, and they can give you the specs you want for your truck... . and you know it is right... . they might even be cheaper if you let them know you were shopping around too..... that is the size tire i run and the same tire... ..... but do not know the actual offset of them, they did the math on that

I second Discount Tires. I get all of my tires there. Of course, every store is different. And even the individual sales people are different.

I believe the factory backspacing is 6". I have 20"x10" with 5. 75" backspacing and it's pretty tight at the rear of the front wheels wells on full turns + articulation. Nothing has ever rubbed, but it's close. With 9" you can probably get way with less, but I'd be careful with anything less than 5. 25.

One other thing to consider when not having adequate backspacing, your brake calipers will be especially vulnerable. I believe WOT is correct, went out and measured the backspacing on my spare, it of course is upside down, but was able to snake the tape measure through the holes in the wheel, looks like 6" is darn close.

I'll see what is available with 6" backspacing. I would imagine wheel manufacturers offer several different backspacing options.

Thanks!

I really like those Rock Star wheels - anybody have those on their truck?

I’ve run two different brands of 285/75R17 tires (Toyo and Nitto) on the stock wheels with no clearance issues.

Um... no.

When I got Nittos from Discount Tire they told me the stock bead seats were not good and I had to buy new wheels. All the ones they sell as “correct for the vehicle” have the wrong offset so the tires stick out and look like crap imo. I was in a bind since they had dismounted the tires so bought what they had. The truck handled like crap, but I do not know if that was just new tire squirm and/or if the wrong offset made it worse. I looked for other aftermarket wheels but couldn’t find any with the correct specs (though I kept my searches to the more reasonably priced wheels). Wound up cleaning up the stock wheels and swapping the tires back. No problems since and much happier, except for being stuck with an almost new set of wheels I don't want.

Moral of the story, don't expect tire stores sell you the right part. Sure it will bolt up, that alone doesn't make it a good fit.

Second moral of the story (which I already knew but made an exception since time was short) never, I repeat NEVER bring the vehicle to the tire place. Always bring the tires and wheels in loose. Once they get your vehicle you are totally at their mercy. Everything from up selling to over tightening the lugs to damaging the underside from incorrect jacking.

Backspacing on a 3rd gen rim is 6. 25 inches. You can usually get away with 5. 75 to 6. 25 on a 9" and 34" tire without issues if your springs are not sagged. If they are sagged a 285/75 tire or a 295/70 can get into the mud flaps or just touch the control arms at times. Nothing serious though. A 285/70 should have no issues with a decent backspace.

The problem with the rims without enough backspace is they stress the front end components more with the change in leverage. We all know how good the OE suspension\steering is. Jumping to a 35" tire and 4. 5 backspace is a killer on the steering.

Best I could do was 5. 75 in a Fuel wheel. They might be making more of them now so definitely check, but, a year ago there was almost nothing with a backspace close to factory. Literally thousands of them with 4. 25 to 4. 75 but a dearth of correct spacing.
