AAA in SoCal insured my C&C with a waiver cutting costs in half, and State Farm in Nevada insured it as a regular pickup, after sneaking it through, but I did have to have all my insurance needs covered under them first, then they got it done. Of coarse, I don’t have to worry any more because I traded it in on the 2019 Ram 3500 SRW. :)

I could have cut mine by more than half if I claimed it as an RV and certified I only used it to pull the 5er. Not honest and I could have lost coverage if I had a wreck pulling one of my other trailers. Just a fact of life.

Good luck with y'all's new trucks.

Ron

My Wis registration is for the nominal 8K#, as that's just about what my trucks have weighed. Years ago I asked about towing an RV, which adds 2100# to rear axle, they reported "...occasional recreational, or misc. home owner maintenance use does not require a "commercial' tag, have a nice day." Thar ya go, corn belt logic hey.

I wonder how much the lottery would have to be, to entice us to move to CA? $googol?

Well Gents, I have heard and am at least looking at a 2014 clone Megacab 3500 with 4100lbs of payload. I hate the idea of giving up my truck I purchased new, but it's a good possible option. Low mileage, well taken care of, decent price. Weighing my options. Thank s for the info again.

The door jam sticker will NOT be 4100 lbs! More likely 3400-3500.

Per a photo of the door “the weight of passengers and cargo should not exceed 4178lbs”. 12,400 GVWR

Must be a low trim level with 68FRE transmission?

Most of the weight for a 5th wheel or other bed loads goes on the rear axle, with the exception of maybe certain truck campers. So a realistic load limit is the RGAWR minus the empty weight of the rear axle.

Base weight of the rear axle is going to be a little North of 3K and rear axle GAWR is 7K, then you can calculate a more realistic load limit.

To be honest, I've been communicating via phone and have only seen pictures so far. I'm not able to drive yet after a spine surgery and haven't been able to make the 2.5 hour trip due to my wife's schedule. I can't speak to the transmission yet, but the trim appears to be Laramie based on the interior and amenities.

The salesman sent a photo of the sticker with axle rating, front is 6k and rear is 7k. Again, the GVWR is 12,400. I'm waiting to hear about the transmission.

Do you have a picture of the the motor? If the transmission dipstick is on the drivers side it is an Aisin, if on the passengers side it is a 68RFE.

BTW:
2015's gained power fold tow mirrors
2016's gained front park sense and ability to move cameras between 8.4 and rear view mirror.

I use my power fold mirrors a lot.

Where do you live. I think you would be far ahead to put airbags on your 2018 or Timbren's and license it for a higher tonnage if your state or providence requires weight fees. Does the 2500 the air or coil suspension?

I live in CA. I keep hearing about air bags being the fix but I haven't heard any way to change the licensing. I was looking into the upgraded coils as well but don't know if thats overkill. I cornered a CHP motor Sgt today and he said bag it and travel responsibly.

There you go!

The 68RFE is what you have now.

I think the 68RFE is a good transmission. I purchased my 2008 in Nov. 2007 and increase the HP/TQ in the spring of 2009. Per Smarty the S67 adds 60HP/120lb.-ft. TQ to the rear axles over and above the stock output, in SW3 level. Since the upgrade I have 100k on the transmission in this configuration and it seems to be still going strong.

I have looked at a newer truck and test drove (very limited) a 2019 Ram. They ride great and a lot of creature comfort in them but there are a couple of things I would not order. One is the 12" touch screen with the Nav package(useless won't allow trailer parameters to be entered), the CD player, the Aisin transmission with the HO engine and a dually. Just my humble opinion.
