So I'm a weekdown he rabit hole and just completed a 1400 get to know each other trip with a Dodge 2500 4x4 rebuilt Auto Trans and Built Cummings. Hamilton Cam and oversize pushrods, FASS, ARP Head Studs... A real beast. So it has an Edge with Attitude on it and a Smarty.

When I complained about the smoke he detuned the Edge and left it on for EGT monitoring and So on and then we put the Fuel economy tune on with the smarty. Did I mention that it has new 50 HP injectors installed? So any throttle in Overdrive will produce the most coupes amounts of smoke. Loose sight of lanes of Traffic Smoke. 18 wheelers will honk at you because they can see through the fuel. I've been running Empty thank goodness I wasn't Towing...

So from what I can tell these tuners are an open loop tune. No feedback from the exhaust? In a Gas engine the O2 sensor monitors an supplies feedback to the fuel system. All these diesel have is EGT and Boost to monitor. More of an Open loop arrangement. So what i think is happening is the tuners are thinking that they are talking to stock injectors and telling them to RUN man RUN, but in reality they are talking to the 50+ HP Injectors and telling them to RUN Man RUN and they are to the point that more fuel is fed than can possibly be used and comes out the tail pipe and Thick Black smoke.

And if any of you were following me out of Renton today on the 405 I'm sorry I didn't drop out of overdrive sooner. I was distracted by my phone. Looked up and had 2 lanes that you couldn't see. If I don't do something I know that they is a fix it ticket in my future.

O.K. so I broke out the Smarty tuner that came with the Truck and detuned from Smarty Fuel Economy to Stock Tune. No smoke when leaving the line, or maneuvering in Traffic with throttle. I did get lane chocking smoke when I was in Over drive and gave it throttle. So I can't lug it at all. Drop out of Overdrive kick the R's up and feed her throttle and everyone is Happy!

Would like to learn more about Tuners and Injectors. Are tuners able to be programmed with what Injector you have?

SO I was able to download the Manual for the Smarty, Came with no documents. I found where you can set the Max PWM for the injectors. So I will find a hill and start to detune the injector dwell on time until I find an acceptable compromise.

O.K. Well I went over to the Smarty Tuner Forum, last Post was 2013, somehow I don't think that they are going to be a lot of help. Off to see if I can find a local source for Help.
