Front axle woes

I recently bought and placed Nitto Ridge Grapplers on my truck and really like the way they look but…they seem to be very hard or stiff , for better words, when traveling over bumps, tracks etc. I have let the air pressure out from 65psi down to 55psi in 5 pound increments and still the same. What is everyone running? Will it hurt to keep going down and how low should I go? The tire says 80psi. Thanks for the help.

The tire says 80 psi for max load, not as the only pressure.

Do you know what your truck weighs? There are load and inflation tables that can be used to run the proper pressure for the load.

No sir I don’t know what it weighs other than it’s a quad cab with an 8 foot box. The info is some good information thanks!

Yes it’s an E but it s a me a little squirrelly now when driving and thought it may be a little much air or could i correct it with less air in the tires.

I am using Nitto Dura Grappler tires on my 2008. When I am not towing the rear are set at 45PSI and the front is set at 60PSI. I have found this to be the most comfortable ride for us in the truck. When towing this is based on my weights of trailer and truck, the front stay at 60PSI and the front
are aired to 70PSI. I used a tire inflation table for NITTO tires to find the proper air pressure for my tires.

Yes I've always noticed that squirreliness with brand new tires.
I have noticed that too when changing to or from certain tires, but I have always wondered if the "squirreliness" REALLY goes away, or if I just become accustomed to and compensate for it. Need to do a double-blind controlled trial to get to the bottom of this!

It been gotten to the bottom of thousands of time, yes it really goes away and is far more pronounced on aggressive tires with tall lugs compared to highway tread. Every set of aggressive tires I have ran doesn't feel very planted at first, completely normal.

I remember putting the Toyo MTs on mine, they have been seriously dangerous the first 200 Miles or so. Felt more like guiding a Pontoon down the Highway then a truck. Took them 1000 Miles to come to normal driving behaviors.

I had those in a 285-75-17. I had high hopes for them but had to return them to Discount Tire for dangerous handling. So much squirm with my 2200# popup that my wife refused to ride with me. I tried 80 psi down to 50psi and in between. No dice. I exchanged them for Toyo AT 111's. Problem solved. Beast of a tire with an aggressive highway tread but unfortunately, they didn't work. I kept them for 500 miles which was the limit of Discount's tire exchange policy.
