Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) No four wheel drive

The 4X4 dash indicator went out then back on a few seconds latter than flickered out and I lost the front drive. I checkedd the vac lines and rod adjustment and fluid level. The front drive shaft is turning but only the rear wheels are spinning in the snow up steep hills. Anybody have a clue to where I could start looking? The truck is a 99 automatic short bed. Thanks!

The 4WD lamp is controlled by a switch on the CAD so your problem suggests a failed vacuum actuator on the CAD or the CAD is gummed up and needs cleaning.

where is the CAD located

CAD = centre axle disconnect. It's on the front axle on the passenger side axle tube. There's a vacuum actuator, a fork and a sliding collar to connect/disconnect the axle half-shaft.

its about $100 and 30min. to fix ,the vac canister leaks unable to pull a vacuum did mine in sept.

My 4x4 lamp flickers at times on the washboards. Do you think mine is gummed up, too?

The switch is faulty or the collar isn't fully engaging. A vacuum leak can do that too.
