Update on Redhead Steering Box: Although I deal with parts ordered from the internet all the time on many of my trucks and tractors, I must be the only one who is completely unsuccessful at dealing with Redhead (Red Head) Steering gear. I ordered the Redhead rebuilt steering box through CPP Diesel and the first unit arrived with stripped bolt holes.

After returning that box, Redhead unilaterally determined that the stripped bolt holes were my fault and would not refund my full purchase price. So, I paid another core charge, shipping and extra fee for their damage and installed the 2nd box. It leaked and had no internal resistance - the steering wheel could be spun from lock to lock. I talked to Redhead requesting my original core back. They said it was mixed in with all others and could not be identified. They told me to return the bad 2nd box, PAY A THIRD $225 CORE CHARGE, and they would send me another box. At this point, I had paid for the box and two core charges (they had my good core) and had no assurance that they would refund any of my money. I asked if Redhead would refund the purchase price or unilaterally determine that I had somehow caused the leak by installing it. I declined to pay any more and returned the defective unit.

Ultimately, Redhead gave CPP Diesel a PARTIAL refund of my money and I had to file a dispute with my credit card company to get the full amount. So, it took me from March 5, 2017 until August 2017 to get most of my money back (less $125 in core and shipping charges) during which time I had the privilege of installing and uninstalling two defective Redhead units, dealing with them on the phone numerous times, and being treated as a liar. When I asked to speak to a higher authority at Redhead, I was told that the owner did not talk to customers. I said that I was not surprised - I wouldn't either if I were him.

I ultimately purchased a USA remanufactured unit from Lares Corp through Advance Auto Parts. Needless to say, I will not be buying anything from Redhead or CPP Diesel in the future.

I ordered my Redhead box directly from Redhead. I was very pleased with the prompt shipping and the box has worked flawlessly for the last 300k miles or so.

I went back and looked as well, yeah deff. Cut out the middle guy and go direct when possible. It's a pretty good site and they document their process, at least they claim to do a lot more then the avg shop.

Sucks you had a bad experience, those boxes look pretty nice.

Has anyone had their box rebuilt, there is a link to submit for a quote to get your box rebuilt, is there a cost savings to that.

If not I will submit for a quote and report back, I have some other major work planned first, but would love to get a better set up overall for my truck at some point. Have spent some decent time researching options for steering upgrades. Too many options for sure it ge t confusing at times.

Now what I've got a Borgenson box that's just shot craps it was a delfi box they said was supposed to be much better than the Saginaw box . Turns out I got just under 60xxx out of it opposed to over 225xx out of the old Saginaw box now they have neither so I was looking at the RedHead box but is their any other quality rebuilders out there

Power Steering Specialists (www.pss1.com; north of Columbus, OH); they supply various parts shops around the country. I put one of theirs in years ago. Got around 200k out of it before it spewed the fluid out the sector shaft seal (I've had the SSI stabilizer on the truck longer than that). That unit was pretty much completely worn out. I put another one in and it's been fine so far for about 20k miles.

Anyone know of a rebuild kit for these boxes. I've looked on Rock Auto and a few other places but the all seem to be kits for the pump and not the box?

Have you read the article in issue 98 page 48? Reading through that makes me believe that rebuilding isn't a DIY job.

Unless I was a highly skilled electronic tech, I sure wouldnt try to rebuild a car radio. Even then it probably isnt worth it. I had a chrysler several years ago that I had the original infinity radio fixed. They realigned the lazers, fixed the display, and fixed the power supply. Radio lasted until I sold the car a couple of years later. I think it cost me about $125 iirc

GAmes, thanks. Yes it is a bit complicated but doable. Anyone have a line on a rebuild kit for one of these boxes. After reading the above posts about problems folks have had with purchased boxes I’d rather give a go at doing mine myself. At least if it didn’t work out I’d only have myself to blame. If it worked out then I’d be able to put another notch on the tool box :)

You could try contacting Redhead directly. Some years ago I sourced a seal kit for my son's Jeep, I believe from NAPA. It was a waste of money, I couldn't get the retainer off.

The steering stabilizer shock can be reused.
The aftermarket bolt on steering box stabilizer brace that I had could not be reused.
It came with an input shaft adapter so stock steering shaft can be used.
