With 229k on my 94, I guess I can expect things to start failing. Yesterday the oil pressure gauge fluctuated wildly for a few seconds and then fell to 0. I was suspicious (and panicky), but doubted the oil pump had failed. The warning light did not come on and I pulled over immediately shut down and then started the engine and she ran fine. I opened the petcock on the Amsoil dual remote housing and oil shot out under pressure, so I closed it and kept going. Later the gauge began operating normally.

Sender I assume, but thought I would check with the crowd to see if anything else might be going on.

Thanks…. .

Most likely the sender. About the only advice I can give you is buy a replacement from Cummins or the dealer. Quite a few folks, me included, have found that cheaper aftermarket auto parts senders don't last long. Ends up costing you more plus you have to replace it twice.

I agree on the sender and don't wait too long before replacing it. Mine puked 2 guarts of engine oil in 2 days. My 97 sender was not available at Cummins. That is the "Dodge" side of the engine. The dealer cost was actually pretty reasonable at $27 plus tax. I am also on my second replacement unit in a little over a month. The first one was just under a month old and started the dancing needle again. Replaced for free by the dealer.

Get a sending unit socket!!! PIA and expletive (deleted) job to do without and a 5 minute job with. I borrowed one from SMorneau for the second swap and it was a dream. I did find a socket at local auto parts store for $7. 99 plus tax while getting a spark plug for lawn mower. My tool box has grown.

Mine has 235000 miles and the oil pressure was dropping to zero and the check guages light would come on. Changed the sender and works fine.
