I know this isn’t anything new, but I inquired about the status of the T51 Water Pump recall having a remedy sometime soon.

When I return home from my current location, I have a nice drive from VA to my new duty station in CO. I’d feel better about the drive knowing the water pump recall has been repaired. Maybe I’m making a bigger deal of this than necessary.

I also asked about the post recall water pump Geno’s Garage has available. Below is there response to my inquiry that I received this evening:

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for contacting the RAM Customer Assistance Center.

We do apologize that your vehicle is under recall for T51 DIESEL WATER
PUMP and T79 BRAKE TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK. We understand your
frustration, and how long it is taking. To explain the process to you,
when we at Chrysler find an issue with certain vehicle we immediately
provide customers with the knowledge that we will be issuing a remedy
for the situation, but then must engineer, test, manufacture, and
distribute a new part, ensuring that it will remedy the situation
permanently. I understand that the time frame for this process can be
undesirable in length, but we are working as quickly as possible to
ensure that the issue will be remedied for you. What I have done is
place you onto a special tracking list so that you will be contacted by
mail, and email or phone, once the parts become available.

In regards to your inquiry about Geno's Garage having the recall part to
correct the concern, being the parts for both recalls have yet to be
distributed to the dealerships, the part would not remedy the situation.
If customers experience an issue with the water pump, dealerships can do
an interim repair, however, once the recall part becomes available
customers will need to take the vehicle to the dealer for a free
inspection for the recall repair. It is possible that the recall may
still need to be completed on the vehicle.

Thank you again for your email. Should you require additional
assistance, or have any new information to provide, please reply to this
email message or call 1-866-RAM-INFO(1-866-726-4636).

Just venting my frustrations as I’m sure many of us may have. Heck, some of y’all may have inquired and received a similar email. Y’all take care.

Called the FCA hot line on recal note. Was told the new pumps were not released yet. When I asked how is it that aftermarket suppliers, Genos, for example are offering it up for sale, he responded it isn't the correct pump. I trust Genos to be right and don't believe a world from FCA. If the spring comes and no pump from Ram, yet, I"ll be buying it from Genos and replacing it myself. At least I'll know the job is done right..

^^^^^ have you inspected your pump to know whether it has Vent/weep holes or not??? If it does no need to do anything as RAM won't replace it either.

No, I haven’t yet as I’m currently OCONUS and only recently found out about this recall. I have a buddy that’s going to change my oil for me and I’m going to see if he’ll take a look. Guess I could have done that before venting on here.

Ask FCA to make your monthly payment until parts come in. I don’t want to drive mine at -30 and have a breakdown and then be walking. Anchorage is 350+ miles (the next real town from me). Since that makes my truck pretty much useless, I’ve asked them to make the note. We’ll see what happens. They covered the note on my challenger back in 2009-10 when the dealer couldn’t figure out a problem and it sat at the dealership.

Parts of that correspondence reads as if it was written by someone in China. Maybe that's where the new pumps will be coming from ??

Ok I’ve been noticing a slight smell of antifreeze and the coolant level has dropped a little so I called my dealer’s service manager to check on the recall.

This morning he and several other service managers were at a meeting/training session in Cincinnati, Ohio and Chrysler announced the new water pumps would start showing up at dealerships February 28.

Typically they send a batch to each dealer so I asked if he would put my name on one of the new pumps if he decided mine was one of the “bad” ones. He agreed :)

So I’ll swing by Monday for a diagnostic on my antifreeze smell.

This is good news but I’ll be honest, I’m a bit skeptical, no disrespect to you or your dealer. I think I’ll reach out to my dealer and see what they have to say. Thanks for the update!

If it is any consolation, I received a recall notice on our 1/2 ton today for the automatic gear shift recall. Again, no parts available for the recall. Just set the parking brake.......

Sorry to hear that. I’m trying to be understanding because I have absolutely no idea all the processes when a recall is identified and how long it should take to come up with a solution to remedy the problem. I’m understanding because I really like my truck but it’s frustrating because the amount of money we pay for these things these days. Humans make them so I get that recalls are bound to happen, I just don’t think it should take so long to come up with a solution. Hopefully they’ll gets yours figured out sooner rather than later.

I think that I commented in the other thread going on with a similar theme that I don't know of any manufacturer that is immune from this happening. However, this is getting extremely frustrating for many, many people.

I currently have with my 3 trucks in my signature, 2 open recalls, the passenger side airbag on the '07 (not really blaming anyone on that one since it is industry wide) and now the gear shift on the 1/2 ton. On top of this, I just went through the multi-week process of trying to track down an impossible to find part for my '07. We are desperately overdue to replace at least one of our trucks, possibly two, and for the first time since I started buying Dodge Rams back since my first in 1992, I don't know if it is the best choice or what if any choice would be better.

The shift interlock recall parts are available for the 17s now"....as far as the water pump,to close out the recall the correct part number and matching labor op must be used.It doesn’t matter if the correct design water pump is installed.
99% of the recall parts do not share a part number with the exact part with the standard part number

Any Idea when the shift parts for my 2010 1/2 ton would be available? It means nothing to me necessarily, it hasn't failed in 8 years and well over 100K. But, my wife drives it often and well.......you know about how well that is going across tonight.

I’ve always been a Ford guy but have liked Dodge/Ram as well. Always liked the Cummins and was really happy when they brought the Hemi back. I’m not going to bash Chevys, but I’m just not a fan. I’m particular about my vehicles and I think Ford makes good trucks, I just really like Rams, the Cummins and the AISIN transmission. I think they’re built well and will last. But I’m with you, though i don’t have the longevity with them like you do, things like this turn me off to the brand, though it could happen to any brand I suppose. I’m hoping these water pumps are now going to start being distributed and repairs made and all will be well for me. I actually just spoke to a local dealer and they confirmed, as well, the recall replacement water should start arriving at the end of this month.

Sorry I haven’t heard that one yet

The flash for the 17 and 18 trucks was out yesterday but they pulled it back earlier today because of some concerns. No word when it might be reissued but I would guess it will be over the weekend.
As far as worrying about the shifter recall the chances of a failure are pretty slim. You have to hold your foot on the brake with the vehicle in park for more than five minutes before the solenoid might get hot enough to stick. I'm not sure any manufacturer tests a BTSI solenoid under those conditions, but it appears someone did it and the solenoid stuck in the released position. If you set the parking brake and put it in park when you shut it off like you’re supposed to, it is really a non-issue.

Thanks for the information. Like I said earlier, I'm not too worried about it personally. However, since my wife drives the truck often, she is up in arms about it. Has visions of it leaving her and running over a bus full of orphans and nuns holding puppies or something.

Anyway, I'll let her read your post and hopefully it will calm her down a little.

Thanks again
