I have been getting a noise coming from the driver's side of the firewall at freeway speed and it has been getting worse. It changes with engine speed and has a tinny tone to it like something is cracked and leaking. Well, today I figured it out!
The rubber boot on the steering shaft had partially separated from the firewall and I was getting engine noise throught the 1/2" wide gap where the boot was off the collar on the firewall.
