Kriss, personally, I don't think that you can really set the preload properly with a nylok and back off 1/3 procedure. If you used a new nylok and drive wedge and followed the book, you'll be ok. Many do it that way with good results, I just don't care to guess. If you look in First Gen Discontinued parts, I list all you need to do it the other old way. You know, I think some nyloks might be red and that could be why you didn't notice it. But if it got tight real quick, its a nylok. Did you use a speedi sleave? Tim

Hey Tim1 I think I will order those parts you have listed on the discontinued parts forum. I was wondering if you could send me step by step instructions to set the pre-load with these new parts?I still have the squeeling from the rear under medium to heavy brake pressure. Could I have done something wrong?Oh yeah what is the major problem with the FSM way of setting preload?I have never done this stuff before,and I'm a bit nervous I have messed something up. I didn't use a speedi sleave. It didn't look like I needed one. But I did replace the inner wheel bearing seal. Should I have used a new nylock nut?Thanks again.

mazdarotary- If you have driven it a day or two without any leakage, I'd say you are good to go. I'm not real sure why the metal ring is there. Seems like you can get them at any driveline repair/ parts place.

I agree with DP, if it isn't leaking now its back together, it is probably ok. Yes, anytime you remove a nylok, you should replace it as it looses it effectiveness once used. That said,if you didn't have one, some blue locktite on the threads would do in a pinch. My problem with nylok is use as intended. Not for torque and 1/3 turn back for preload. Nylon can become brittle after settin on a shelf for a long time and possibly not allow the stake to seat right. Just too many things. If you follow the instructions for setting the preload of the front axle and apply to the rear, you will have it. E-mail me if you need help, really it is not a difficult procedure once you have done one. One more thing, I recommend using speedi seal on the axle housing before you get the groove in the tube, believe me you will get a groove in the tube some day, it may be a rubber seal, but it will wear metal.
