Greg,

I'm first and foremost trying to quiet the inside as much as feasable from both road and engine noise. I take some long drives in my truck and as a few of us have said it does wear on a body after a couple hours. So if I can get the cab relatively quiet that will be great. After that, well if I have material left then I'll work on quieting the engine on the outside a little. Mainly I'm interested on the inside.

Quieting the cab

VC: I was able to cut down some sound in the cab by adding an extra seal to the top of the cowl, just behind the skinny factory seal. I also added a similar seal to the forward door seal. Mike Beggy mentioned these added seals. I'll post a photo of each.



Open your hood, and look between the fender and the hood hinge down inside just ahead of the door hinges. There is a thin 1/4" foam 'seal' just ahead of the door hinges. I added a layer of the 'superfoam' from GSI over the top of the factory piece. There is a lot of noise coming into the cab from this area.



Did you add a layer of panel deadener over the structure behind the front kick panels? These are by your outboard ankle just ahead of the door. I would cover with a layer of the 'dynamat' type sheet then a layer of the 1/2" soundstop foam.



Make sure you have done everything you can to cover the transmission hump and insulate any gearshift lever boots.



Here is a photo of the upper cowl seal, it is just a strip of 1" thick foam about 2" wide running from hood hinge to hinge. This blocks a lot of the noise coming through the windshield.

This seal is also made out of 1" thick foam about 1. 5" wide, glued in place.

Be careful closing off those door seals, if you can't blow out the leaves that collect there ,the door hinges rust off thier posts,it is cheaper to trade the truck in on a new one. Been there on previous trucks. I have never went to blow them clear and nothing there.

Door hinge crud

RJ2, I don't think I've ever found leaves in the door hinge area! ??? Is this area designed different in the later trucks than in your truck that had the problem?



I've had a fair amount of dirt and mud accumulate when I didn't have mud flaps. And I've had freezing rain fill the hinge area up so bad that I thought I would damage the door or hinges when I tried to open the door.



The seal I installed is open at the bottom of the hinge area so that water and whatever can drain out the bottom.



Hopefull there won't be any corrosion issues with the additional seals.

Greg, just sent you an email. I am going to be able to make Muncie on Sunday so we can put some of this lead stuff in my truck there. Do you want more than 2 rolls?



Now I just need to know where the heck I'm going. I can get to Muncie but I have no idea where the get together is. Is everything in one place like at a fairground?

The headliner is not that bad to remove. I've had mine off twice now. Granted, I have a reg. cab, I dn not think it would be that bad in an ext. either. IMO, applying some type of material to the roof of the truck is well worth the effort. Deading the roof definitely helps the sound quality of a high end stereo.

You are going to Muncie. Do you think you could grab an extra roll of lead for me as well?

I have to find out what the import limit is. Whether or not it is 400 canadian or 400 american. Provided they have it available and I stay under the duty limit I can pick up several extra rolls.

There are sites for lead sheets . I thought you could still get it at the roofing and plumbing houses. On the medical centers we use to make our x-ray doors with it I just put in lead sheets on GOOGLE search site and it came up with a lot of different suppliers. Cant seem to get the address's to load on this post.

I did not do the kick panels yet. I did take care of the rea around the 4wd shifter on the hump however.

The entire floor and back wall and as far up as I could up the firewall are covered in both the deadner and the foam.

How many square feet of lead sheeting are you guys using. Im looking to do the rear wall. Floor up to the fire wall. The quad cab doors. And possibly a little in the doors to reduce resance in those. I think i might have found a supplier a little closer to home and would love to get some and try it out.

Seedguy: the lead sheet that Goober found comes in 4'x8' sheets, so 32sq ft. each. The cost was about $1. 03 per # Canadian . Plus shipping of course, which was more than the material cost. It weighs 64# per roll.



I think you could do a pretty complete job with three rolls. This would include the doors I'm pretty sure. I personally haven't done the doors yet on my truck. I'm hoping to find the time soon, after Muncie.



If you are going to cover the oil pan and valvecover and some of the intake trough, maybe four rolls would be a safer bet. You could cover the back wall with a second layer if you had a lot of extra.



Goober said that the passenger side floor over the exhaust was a big radiator of noise, so a second layer there would also work if you have extra.



Mike Beggy called me today, and he did the interior in the GSI panel deadener last weekend, and is very pleased with the reduced road and exhaust pipe noise. The GSI panel deadener is like the 'dynamat' and 'brownbread' products, just about 1/3 to 1/2 the cost. GSI is a wholesaler, and we get a 15% discount too!. www.soundstop.com ask for Don.

Hope this answered your question, if not just get out a measuring tape and do a rough estimate and add 20-30% for corners and curves.

Okay, I can bring back $800 US worth of lead. That's alot of lead! Doing rough calculations with exchange rate each lead sheet is $45 US. Buying the rolls for myself, Greg and Cooker is going to be $375 US. That about shoots it for me, but I can have my girlfriend pay cash for some as well.

Noise Reduction 'Bombing Session'

I'm hoping to have time in Muncie on Sunday to pull the back seat and roll up the rear carpet on Jerry's truck and install a layer of lead.



I just heard from Denis [Goober] and he is going to be at Muncie too! He is the original user of lead for noise reduction, so maybe he will help with the install.



I really want to make at least one 1/4 mile run, just to get a time ticket, so I may be absent part of the time on Sunday.
