If you think the lead sounds dangerous to your health, you should read the warning label on the can of contact cement!!  :p :D

How did we live without cell phones?? I can't imagine being without one.

Well, we're back from Muncie, now I have to get to work to make some more cash for the next round of 'bomb's'

Lead

RAMTHIS1,

I'm thinkin' that given the news in the last 24 hrs, the guys lining their trucks with lead may end up with the safest vehicles on the road - properly shielded from potential environmental hazards! :(

Well I'm back from my "lead session" :D Here are the positives to the lead: 800 lbs of it in the back made the truck ride nice, there were two great TDR members there to help with the install (basically DO the install, thanks Greg & Dennis), and it did quiet the back seat down ALOT. The driver's seat is a little quieter, the exhaust drone is gone. Didn't see much change in the passenger seat. But that was just a small amount of the cab being completed. After hearing the noise, or lack of, in Greg's and Dennis's trucks, I'm certain it will be worth the time and money spent. I'll let everyone know how much change there is after doing the entire floor, all 4 doors, and as much of the firewall as I can reach.

Greg,

In the driver's seat I went from 75-77 db A scale to pretty solid 73. The back seat is at 70-71, I forgot to take a reading before we started there. What suprised me is the passenger seat that was always a pretty solid 75 is still 75, only the driver's and back seat changed.

I'd like to report my results to date. I had chimed in earlier when I had covered the firewall and cowl area. At that point, I had a baseline noise reading of 84 to 86 dbA on the center console between seats. The firewall work brought noise down to 81 or so at my baseline freeway speed of 82 mph. I completed seat removal and followed Greg's experience and covered all the areas outlined in his threads. The results are too amazing to have not done this a long time ago. I now have readings of 74 to 75 dbA which is more than 10 points lower than at the start. My main culprit was reflected engine and road noise. I now hear the engine sound as it should be but no overwhelming other noises. The truck is now much more pleasant to drive and I'm sure will result in less fatigue on the long hauls. Many thanx to Greg for his efforts and feedback during this project.

You are Welcome

Actually my thanks goes out to you guys, Jerry for bringing the load of lead to Muncie, saving us [Doc, Ryan and Myself] a lot of shipping costs.

And to Mike for reporting and verifying the results of the noise reduction 'recipe' that I gave him with dB meter purchase and readings.

Brian [Bcfast] for sharing the info about GSI www.soundstop.com for the 'superfoam'.

It is also gratifying to have other CTD members join me in my pursuit of noise reduction, for awhile I thought I was the only TDR member interested in noise reduction.

Now that new products and proceedures have shown up I have to update my older soundproofing products to the newest and most effective ones.

So the interior is going to come out and a layer of lead is going on the entire floor, maybe a double layer over the passenger [exhaust] side. I currently have only a few pieces of lead on the floor, and an extra layer of jute carpet padding.

And eventually the doors will get the lead treatment.

A big thanks goes out to Denis [Goober] for the help with the noise 'bombing' session on Jerry's truck. Your help allowed me to take in some drag racing and truck talk with fellow TDR members.

Jerry, when you pull your seats for the floor treatment, I'd recommend a second layer over the exhaust side of the floor to block out as much of the exhaust pipe noise as you can. This should bring down the dB readings on Andrea's side of the truck:D

Don't forget to do the inside of the intake trough, a lot of noise comes through the HVAC inlet and into the passenger side.

Thanks to all, Greg Long The Noise Nazi

Now that's a good picture!!

Just being funny..... no flames intended.

The lead sheets here are in 30" by 30" or 48" rolls. The 30" x 30" are 16lbs. I am picking up a few this pm.

And glad to be alive to talk about it too. :)

The better 1/2 always said I was an accident wainting to happen...

Though, I think that 90% humidy you guys get and the smoke I ate the day before had more effect on me than that.

btw, I did use gloves when I did my truck, and would recm'd it.

With all these "Lead Sleds" runnin' down the road, it'll be interesting the see one on the scales.

"Dang a 10,000lb pick-up!!":--)

What's that gonna' do to your weight rating?

Jerry,

A huge thanks for making the room in your truck for a couple extra rolls of lead for me. I really appreciate your kindness and willingness to help a fellow TDR brother out.

Hopefully I will get a chance to install some of this stuff soon so I can give my opinion too.

Take care,

Ryan

Has anyone done anything do reduce wind noise? I like how quiet my truck is when I have a tail wind, but a headwind or crosswind drives me nuts. I think my seals are all ok. Anyone? Thanks

Chris

Ryan,

You betcha! Hopefully next year I will be able to spend the weekend in Muncie and we can toss back a couple. I'm also going to talk to Greg and Steve to see about going to some future GLTDR get togethers, maybe see ya there.

Chris,

Greg (LSFARM) installed some extra foam around the doors where the rear and front meet. I'm sure he'll chime in with the results. With just the little bit I've done I really notice the wind noise now as well. I'm sure we'll figure something out.

Try pushing the REAR of the window seal UP. You would think that this would increase the gap, but it made mine a lot quieter. Before there was an annoying hissing sound, now it is gone. At first I didn't think I moved it, but it fixed that sound. I did this by grabbing the seal at the bottom and just running my fingers up the seal while I was holding onto it. It kinda heats up your fingers, but it did the trick nicely. You might want to try it and it might take a few tries before it stays, but if you have the same problem I did you will be VERY glad you did it.

Speaking of keeping the Cummins safe...

I'm really glad I went to Muncie. Meet some great guys.

I also met a whole wack of Cummins engines that have been abused for a long long time.

You name it, I talked to all kinds of club members who've done just about everything that could be done to that engine, propane, double turbos, plates, injectors, delivery valves, and on and on and on.

That Cummins, when it's had enough of those mods just spits out Dodge parts all over the place... . and it just keeps on chugin.

Lead, heck, that's like a bubble bath .
