Noisy Lifters?

I have not been this deep into the 6BT yet and do not know whats in there. But with properly adjusted valves, can the lifters make noise? Are these hydraulic? I have an annoying rattle at 2000 RPM + or - 100. It is not there before or after. Only there. Sounds like what a noisy lifter on a gasser would sound like. This of coarse is from the cab while driving. I just bought a set of 60# exhaust springs and would like to know this before changing them in.

Our motors use a flat tappet and not a lifter. They are solid not hydralic and to change them involves quite a bit of work since the cam needs to be removed. I am not saying that they are not your cause but I would venture to say iit is something else since it happens at a spec. rpm range. Change the valve springs and adjust lave lash... see what happens.

I don't think it is the lifters, I have the same noise atthe same rpm as well as a few others I have spoke with. Pretty well narrowed it down to a hydraulic hammer in the lines or injectors. It seems to appear with the fuel turned up more than at stock pressures.

i have the same thing since i turned up my pump, thought the timing was too high but lowering had no effect, rylons how long has yours been doing this? will it damage anything?

Thanks for the answers. I dont know about the turned up pump though. I may have before but I now have a stock rebuild in there. (Hate it) Good news on the flat tappets. Always hated hyd's. I wish this truck reved like my 92. Smoooth.

Rebel Ram- check your injectors- they can make it rough.



Glad to know I am not the only one with a light rattle at 2000RPM. I thought it was something with the fuel system, and retarding my timing helped a hair, but not enough to undo the side effects (higher EGT, less MPG). My pump has been turned up a little bit.

I really think it is just a hydraulic hammer noise and it shouldn't hurt anything. Mine has did it since 2001 and it never gets worse. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I have that too but I always thought it normal... whatever normal really is.

I think I hear it when the engine is not loaded and the stereo is on low.

I guess it could be the injectors. I put POD's on a while back before the pump went south. I did alot of tweeking in a short amount of time soon after I got the truck so I did not get too used to this trucks "song". Interesting theory though. Could an injector be "noisy"? I got mine used. They certianly lived up to their reputation for performance gain. Perhaps an experiment to try before I get my 14mm H&R pump together and installed would be to put the stock injectors in and see if the noise goes away. Along with the 60# Ex springs.
