I have 173,000 miles and counting on my original 5 speed NV 4500 trans. It is starting to make some bearing noises when in fifth gear. So I am hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. I plan to start collecting parts before it goes. Once fifth gear goes, I figure I will rebuild the entire trans rather than just repair the gear. I want to know the best place to get a rebuild kit and also what is the best way to solve the issue of losing fifth gear. Will a fully splined shaft for fifth gear solve that issue once and for all? Also, what clutch is the best to get while still being as easy to use as the stock one? I still have the original clutch.

As always, thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

Thanks, I will do that, I had forgotten about him. I ordered a pinion shaft seal from him a few years back and he had good customer service.

surfbeetle,

Quad 4x4 only! Dan knows everything about this NV4500. One of our members had some bad luck awhile back with one of Blumenthal's products and they wouldn't make it good. I totally redid mine with Quad 4x4. Outstanding support! Customer service is right up there with Southbend clutch.

Thanks everyone, this really helps. I think that rebuilding it won't be too bad money wise. I really like the guarantee that quad4x4 has on the fifth gear. I probably will go that route when I rebuild it.

Next question: once fifth decides to let loose, is it okay to drive it with fourth only or does that cause more internal damage? Mind you that mine hasn't gone yet but the trans is getting noisy.

What's the highest mileage that anyone has on an original nv4500? As I said before, I have 173,000 and counting on mine.

You can go with 4th with no problem till repaired. It just rides on the tail shaft loose. Mine has not been touched at 190k.
