I do have to say like Jim Anderson said in issue 32 of TDR

(lube changes, adding fluid capacity) is the key to long life...

www.fastcoolers.com will add fluid capacity to the NV 4500/5600

( 50% to the NV 4500's and 44% to the 5600's )

Fast 1,

So... if I buy your oil coolers (both sides of course) for my NV4500 I could use the tetrahedron brand of oil without getting heat damage to my transmisson?

Personally I've only used syntorq, but I would rather not engage in oil disscusions, sorry. I can say, that from personal experience that involved 10,000 miles per month for over 5 years towing 26,000 lbs, a mere 4 quarts DOESN"T WORK !!!

When towing on a 105 degree day with syntorq, the temp. in the case is 230 degrees, but the oil in the Fast Cooling tubes is 220 degrees. There is a constant dissipation of heat away from the case. We are not adding mere ounces but a full 2 quarts to a 4 quart capacity transmission. So, whatever oil you decide to use, Fast Coolers will definately help.

In 1999 when Ford come out with their new ZF manual six speed transmission they also come out with an internal pump and a cooler. I believe their cap. is approx. 7-8 quarts. I believe the NV 4500 is a very strong transmission, but it needs more than a mere 4 quarts when bombed and towed with.

Fast 1,

It IS an oil discussion. Some guys on this thread do not know the difference between trying to promote further advancement and name calling. These same people are far from being able to offer professional advice or opinion. Until proven otherwise I am sticking with Syntorq. In a couple of posts I have stated that I would always be willing to entertain real world data and if that means switching oils, I could do that. I firmly believe that the others dont have any.

The same goes for your product Verlyn, until then, the probability of my buying is inversely proportional to the magnitude of your selling it. Please read into the second sentence up top.

Don~

My professional advice or opinion would be:

(use syntorq and a Fast Cooler )

The Fast Cooler adds 50 % oil capacity with its finned alluminum construction maintains a 10 degree cooler temperature in the cooling tubes themselves, these are the facts.

I am pleased with syntorq, their's just not enough oil capacity for the duty that we put them to.

Other oils may be just as good or better, all I am saying is more oil is better. especially when we are only starting with 4 quarts.

Verlyn, here are facts:

A sneeze comes out of your mouth at over 600 MPH.

Almonds are members of the peach family.

111,111,111x111,111,111=12,345,678,987,654,321.

Yours are general theories with many variables. Not professional opinions.

Don~

Don, I'm only trying to give you some real world data like you asked for, this is what happened last summer.

It's 105 degrees outside today I'm grossing 26,000 lbs, I am hauling 3 vehicles on my 52 ft. triple axle trailer. I have stopped to check the temperatures in the transmission case, its 230 degrees and the temp in the Fast Coolers is 220 degrees. Yes their are some variables but this information is FACT not theory.

As for my professional opinion, It's just my . 02 cents worth. Have a great day and good luck.

Fast 1,

I was just pickin' at ya.

Hope you did not get the wrong idea. I would not know if your opinions are professional or not, I do not know you or your qualifications.

Thats alot of weight you were towing. I too have towed upwards of that amount. We both know the trans is not even designed to exceed 16,000, so... . we better be careful.

You have a good day too. Not kidding!

Don~

Don,

Did you use to be registered under another user name? Your tone sounds very familiar!;)

Basically, DC, Standard transmission, Joe, you, and some others keep saying over and over again about the heat problem. The GL-5 additives will attack the soft metals in the synchros.

All I am saying is this:

I called Amsoil about the warning label. They said we are rated GL-2 to GL-5, plus MT-1. This lube is safe for this transmission.

People have been using it in these transmissions since 1994. (this was in 98)

I drained the Castrol at 26,000 miles. It was burnt up, thick, and generally disgusting. And DC tells you to run it 100,000!!!

In goes the Amsoil, one change until 88,000. Clutch failure led me to shift without the clutch, burning 3rd synchro out.

I went to Enterprise Engine to have it fixed, plus the fully splined mainshaft. (Never had the 5th problem, my shaft was PERFECT, but changed any way, BOMB up, right?)

(BTW,

I went to Enterprise over buying a rebuilt unit from Standard for 2 reasons: One, Standard said they only change parts if they are wore enough in their rebuilds, I knew mine was taken of, I justed needed a part or two. Perhaps this explains their short warranty? Just my opinion, no facts.

Two, Mitchell was closer, and an excellent clutch installer. )

I went in there, fully prepared to eat crow, if it looked bad, and announce to the TDR Joe was right, I was wrong.

Trust me, if the Amsoil was causing damage, it would have been drained.

They opened it up, and wow, it is the BEST looking guts they had ever seen. NO soft metal damage, no excessive heat marks, very little dirt at all.

They specialize in Dodge 5 and 6 speeds,(and 5. 9 POWER) and I compared parts while I was there. Lots of mangled burnt up synchros that were running Syntorq.

Steve came in next day with his properly maintained Castrol unit, for a clutch and 5th update,. Opened it up, burnt looking oil.

Radixr came after that, for a clutch, 5th update, with an Amsoil unit, again, SUPER, SUPER, clean, no damage.

This is a rotten deal by DC, and I feel strongly about it, not because I sell Amsoil, but because I own a Cummins, and I do not like to be ripped off.

DC can sell Castrol at $5 a qt, and still double their money.

I will leave the "science" to Joe, I have no "tests" to prove Amsoil is better in this case, all I have is my common sense and my eyes.

You fellas run what you want, but please, don't try the scare tactics DC likes to use on the new guys.

Some of us don't get scared by big corporations.

Joe,

I really didn't mean to offend you. Oops. Yes, your tests are very scientific, they just don't mean anything!

I have decided to review your past articles, and do a little "THIS IS YOUR LIFE JOE!" article.

I think it would fun for the whole family to read!

Mr. Fast,

How about finned covers?

Gene

Plain and simple, for a change, this site is being used as a cheap marketing tool. How much should the members tolerate of these unsolicited sales pitches and attempts of "fellow" members to utilize the TDR for personal gain. Get off your commercial band wagon and stop taking advantage of the TDR members. "Pimp" your wares in a store front or do you lack the confidance to do so? What gaurentee can you possible offer... . none? I thought so!

Changed it at 150+K

Gene, I bought my truck from a friend who shows horses, most of the miles are with a 4 horse trailer in tow, country wide. I changed the FACTORY oil when I got the truck and studied it. Yes, it was used oil, no, it was not thick, burnt or "disgusting", it was simply used. My employer maintains a laboratory whos duties include, but are not limited to, lubricant analysis... on steam, hydro and gas turbines, ( gas turbines are "land locked" jet engines coupled to a generator), the guys checked out the oil (just for "fun") and found NOTHING that would indicate abnormal condition of the oil. Hummm! Sorry, fresh Syntorq went back in... no sale.

Did I du that? LOL!

Hey, after an hour 20 min. drive from work, I'm tired ya know!

Good for you Mike! Glad it is working out for you, and glad you bought more because it was working, not because DC scared you!

I'll tell the next guy who calls with a burnt up transmission the oil is fine, it just looks like it was on fire!

About finned covers, great idea Gene. I almost manufactured them also but start up costs limited me.

An alluminum cover would take up more space given its thickness. I also didn't want to mess with the factory sticker with their oil requirements, that seems to be so important to them.

Tell you what Mr. Fast, I peeled those little buggers right off, and put AMSOIL decals in their place!

You make the covers, and I'll keep you supplied with Amsoil decals!!

Gene, Mike, is this better?

Well Gene, looks like ya got another customer.

Hope you have professional omissions insurance.

Or will Amsoil cover you there too?

Tell me Gene, do you choose cereal for the fiber or for the toy?

Don~

Don, If you have ever had the pleasure of attending one of Gene's Tupperware partys you would allready have known that with every buy you get a "Happy Meal"... . would you like fries with that or the stickers and action figures. I have to go change my signature... . goodnight.

Spam.

Don,

Now you've gone too far. Trashing Gene, Amsoil, and vendors is one thing but slamming Spam is over the top and I won't stand for it! :D

Have you ever tried a fried Spam and Velveeta sandwich? I didn't think so or you would not take the name of Spam in vain! ;) ;) :p :p
