is there anything a guy can do to eliminate the free play in the shifter, can you get a bushing kit and rebuild it or do i have to buy a new shifter?

Nothing I know of can be done to yours. You need a '98 and up shifter top. They're getting harder to find but they're out there. One of the best things I did do mine. Pattern seems like it's about 1/2 of the old style like you have.

BD's Short Shift kit

Wow, I have a 2001, and was wondering the same thing. I do not expect it to be as accurate as the Hurst in my 'cuda, but come on... third gear is a real PIA sometimes... I ordered one of BD's Short Shift kits from Geno's, bit am a bit doubtful if this is really going to solve the problem... if there are wear items, it would be great to know what they are, and if when I put the kit in, I can replace them...

Find somebody with a '94-'97 truck with an NV4500 and drive it a while. You'll love yours.

Remember, it's a truck, not a sports car, and it has a 3' shifter, not a 1' shifter.

Yes I know it is not a sports car... I grew up driving tractors, old Mack trucks, military Jeeps and Model A fords... I had an old Chevy with the 'school bus' trans, talk about stift shifts...

i actually love the old school nv, i think it shifted smoother. so why cant one of the manuafacturers make a rebuilt kit for the shifter top, they make a killing selling kits for as many of those trannys that are out there
