Competition 1 3/8" input upgrade for 6 speed?

Competition which gear?

well its about time for a transmission, still got the stocker but she's ready to go after two yeras of sled pulling with the new PDR motor. Who remans the biggest baddest NV4500 ? is there anything other then a fully splinned shaft and fifth gear nut that can be done to these things ? stouter gears and internals etc... ? any body ever dealt with Standard Transmission ?

Figures it would start to go right after I put the NP271 T-Case in :(

The reverser and drop box are not an option due to $$$$

They are easy to rebuild.
I second that. I've been through a couple with Standard Trans parts and it's not a big deal. You've already got the big input shaft so if your gears are good I'd stay with it. I've not heard of many tough internal parts for them.

I was really pleased with my experience with www.quad4x4.com they had the new 5600 cheaper than standards rebuilt by about 300 dollars and standard never called me back they have a great shop also and are very knowledgable Kevin

Std Trans gives a good price on an excellent rebuilt NV4500 with fully splined mainshaft, but it is stock quality parts, not something like high nickel 9310 gears (not available for the 4500). The only significant change/upgrade for the 4500 that I know about is the 1-3/8 x 10 spline input that some sled pulling companies offer. Then, you have to match it to the clutch disk(s) you select.

So its safe to say that the only thing one can do to upgrade the NV4500 is basically the fully splined mainshaft, 5th gear nut and that's about it. I talked to somebody at Quad 4x4 yesterday they are coming out with, or already have, a full suported mainshaft suposed to be far superior to just the fully splined. That doesn't really benifit me in the sledpulling arena but though I would let folks know. I am not at the level were a drop box and reverser would benifit me, it would be way over kill were I am at, however might come into play later :D Quad4x4 also said if I send them my 1 3/8" input shaft they could build the transmission to it, shim's and adjust end play sound like nice folks I would also get the cast tail piece to replace the aluminum one my 97 has.

Thanks for the replies everybody.

Scott,

Look up a thread started by John Strenkowski (CPFF).

He ran into an alignment issue with the cast iron extension housings for the NV-4500's...

Matt

I chekced with Std. Trans a while ago on that alignment issue and they found their housings to be right on spec. I know of several in use and no problems have been encountered.

Well, John Strenkowski is not the type of guy to sound the alarm for no reason. He found more than one housing that was off. Just because 'vendor X' didn't find anything wrong with their testing doesn't discount the fact that there have been some issues.

If these issues have been resolved, great - that's a good thing. If the issues haven't (is there a casting or serial number to reference?) subsided... 'buyer beware'.
