A pump and cooler would most certainly help lower oil temps but I am not sure there would be any gain for all the trouble. I regularly get 100,000 miles from Royal Purple oil in my NV 5600's before they start shifting harder, and that is towing over 50% of the time. The most critical issue in the 5600 is getting oil to the rear bearing and that is accomplished by having Standard Transmission of Fort Worth install their Power Lube Package.

Godspeed,
Trent

Has anyone considered placing a low flow low pressure pump and a transmission cooler on the NV5600? Looks like this would be a fix for the high temps created in this transmission. I would think a small cooler with fluid flowing through it would make the fluid stay cooler and last longer between changes. I haven't tried it yet but to me it is something to consider... ...

My 2003 Dodge with the NV-5600 had 100,000 miles when I sold it to my Grandson. I installed the Amsoil fluid recommended for the NV-5600 trans at 30,000 miles, and never had an issue with over heating!

Blumenthals in OKla City recommended an eight quart fill which is what I have. My memory--ain't so good anymore--is that the incorrectly located fill hole (being located too low) was a G56 issue and not a NV-5600 issue.

I just got done installing my SDD-3250 clutch and changed the fluid in the transmission while I was at it. I had a question about the input shaft tolerances while I had the transmission down and called Standard Transmission. I had asked about the PowerLube package. He told me the only issues they have seen with the NV5600 is broken teeth or rear bearing issues due to lack of lube. He told me to put 7 quarts in and it is basically doing the same as the PowerLube modification. (I don't have any coolers on my trans. )

I've got 140K on mine now and it shifts fine and never had a problem other than the clutch release bearing.

One of the lower cover bolts is what I was talking about. Isn't that the way you drain the transmission? Thanks for the quick reply.

Jeff

Before I had FastCoolers, I pulled the covers completely. You would be surprised how much fluid is caught in the "sump" of the trans between the covers... probably only matters if you change brands of fluids I guess.

I only ever used never-seize, never had as much as a seep. I would guess a dab of RTV would work if you're concerned about it...

This has worked well for me even though it may not get out every drop. I do change it often though, about every 25~30k.

I don't have a temp gauge on my NV5600 trans, but I used to over fill a quart. I have the Fast coolers and use Penzoil Sycromesh gear lube. What was happening I used to get weep age between the engine and trans. Now that I keep the oil at the bottom of the fill hole, I no longer have that weep age. My oil pan, cross bar had lots of oil residue on them, now dry.

Ok, since I started this thread so long ago... opinion question time:

I'm due for a trans fluid change... I have had Redline MTL (or mix of MTL and MT90) in this trans for over 150k. Putting less miles on the truck these days, and thinking of going back to Pennzoil synchromesh since its much easier to get. With almost 270k on the clock, it probably doesn't matter.

Anyone see any issues dropping back to PZ?

FYI - I've been using PZ Synchromesh (plus the 1 quart overfill) since 50k miles. At 200k it still shifts fine. No known issues. .

... is that sending unit just epoxied to the case? Steve, how are you getting your readings?

Yes, also intrested in sender options. I might be looking to do the same just to monitor.

What's the choice for lube nowadays- I still prefer Syncromesh, and am due for a change. Is there a relation to different lubes and temps?

Gary, have you found a source for the filter in the PTO cover kit? I haven't been able to get it or refrencce it anywhere but Geno's, which I'm OK with, but would like a back up source.

Does anyone know the thread size of the filler plug of the 5600?

Sending unit discussion is in this thread... mine is mounted in the PTO cover...

Synchromesh is a fluid type... Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF, Royal Purple SynchroMax, etc. are all synchromesh fluids.

Gary hasn't been on here in a long time, I'm surprised his photos are still here...

I think the plug threads may be metric...

;)

Sorry, Steve for the dopey post. I didn't realize how long it's been around- and I haven't seen it... What ever happened to Gary anyway?

I meant PZ Syncromesh. Though I only have 93K mostly unloaded on the clock, it's all city mileage so I have enough shifts in that transmission to realistically double whats on the clock. I have been using the PZ since the OE fluid was drained @ approx. 35K. I have no problems except for a bit of shifter hop in 6th in a light load/ accel/coast.

I don't know what happened to Gary... he was one of the best contributors to this forum.

I believe most feel PZ is the OE fluid provided in the NV5600. I ran it a while, then started looking for that "better" fluid; mainly because the two fills I ran had loads of brass in them. I've read where some think PZ is synthetic, but I have my doubts.

I'm probably going to continue with redline since it seems to work for me.
