2004.5 Mileage Loss Early-On

Hi!

I purchased a new 04. 5 Truck 2 weeks ago. After about the third day I noticed a rattle coming from the transmission area. I immediatly took it to the dealer but when I got there the noise was gone. I explained the noise to him and he called Tech support

who told him it is a normal characteristic of the 5600. Has anyone else had a similiar issue with this Transmission in a 04? I am aware of the TSB for clutch noise but it does not apply to 04's. It does go away after the transmission warms up or if I disengage the clutch.

you will have some gear clash noise that is pretty noticeable in the lower gears at low RPMs and under a slight load. The noise is normal and nothing to worry about. If you're still getting a noise with the clutch pushed in, however, I suspect you have a problem.

Not sure the exact noise you are talking about. However I find that the 04

makes a "different" sound when I lug it compared to the 99 5spd. That sound seemed to lessen with miles. 10K+ now and it is almost gone... ... ... or I just don't hear it any more.

my 04. 5 6 speed has a good deal of noise with the clutch out in neutral. I push the clutch in and it goes away... Heck, this "clutch" noise is almost as loud as the engine...

It sounds like there is a marble(s) in the transmission when the pedal is released in neutral but only or mostly when it is cold. I suspect that DC still has the clutch problems in the 04's and it was not solved with the 03's at least not completely. The 5600 sure is noisy compared to the 4500 in my 99isb. I find it does not shift or synchronize as smoothly either. When gearing down from second to first does anyone else find it clunkly?

My work truck (NV4500) isnt near as smooth as my 5600 in my 600. As stated before its just gear lash at low rpm low gear, Both my trucks do it and they almost sound identical.

oilburner,

The noise in neutral isn't anything serious to worry about. I have a dual disk clutch in my 5600 and it makes the same noise. What you're hearing is the gears clashing together because the dampening springs on the clutch disk aren't totally removing the vibrations (or lack of springs at all on my clutch). When you tip the throttle and add a couple hundred RPMs the noise should disappear since the gears have a load on them. A different clutch disk can get rid of the noise, but there isn't anything wrong.

The 5600 takes more effort to shift because it is MASSIVE compared to a 4500, which behaves more like a traditional (lighter duty) transmission. Mine shifts fine, but you can't rush it like a car transmission.

My transmission has been rattling for 15,000 miles now. I would rather it rattle then replace a clutch that has softer dampening springs. I bought a truck and if it sounds like one , that is ok by me. FWIW. Casey

I have a 2000 Ram 2500 with the 6-speed and 109,000+ miles and a 2004. 5 with the 6-speed. The 04. 5 is so quiet that more of the transmission noise is heard inside the cab. I am sure the 00 6-speed is just as noisy. They actually shift pretty good and fairly quickly except for the 5-6 shift. I accidentally got it to downshift into 2nd at 60mph(it was nighttime and I was going for 4th) one time and that surprised me. Give it time to break in and it will serve you well.

My 600 6spd has the same rattle when you first start it up after setting over night or enough time for it to cool. You can engage the clutch or put light presure on the gear shifter and the noise will stop. After you drive a few miles and stop the rattle is gone. Noticed the noise the 1st week and told the dealer about it and they asked I bring it in and leave it. I crossed my fingers and hoped it would go away but it hasnt in 6000 miles, guess its back to the dealer.

mine has the same rattle,i suspected a throw-out bearing. the dealer replaced the clutch and it still makes the same noise, im shure its just gear clash. im going to add some lucas when i drain the transmission fluid, and see if that helps
