I have been experiencing a strange phenomenon with my NV5600 transmission.

The problem only occurs when the transmission is at full operating tempeture.

When I shift into reverse, the truck feels like it want to take off backwards (a very strong pulling feel) even though I am only idling. It is hard to describe what I am feeling, but it is not how is normally feels.

Following this "surge" when I shift back to neutral and release the clutch pedal, the pedal appears to rise slowly (I have the urge to pull the pedal up with my toe.

Particulars:

bone stock 2001 HO

milage 76000

change transmission fluid three weeks ago before a 900 mile tow (6000# TT)

Mopar transmission fluid

I have also been experiencing grinds when going into reverse or a distinct clunk.

How was the condition of your fluid when you drained it?

Did you pull the PTO cover completely off and take a look inside, or just the bottom bolt to drain it?

Did you get all 9. something pints of new oil back in?

The situation started after the fluid change.

I removed the PTO cover and filled until it came out the fill hole. The fill was probably somewhere between 8 - 9 pts given some spillage (i don't have a Jays-EZ funnel YET).

The other change is the towing I have done since. I didn't notice the problem in the week between doing the oil change and doing the 900 mile tow (Interstate 81 through PA to MD). Lots of hills doing 65-70 mph.

I am not an expert but it sounds like your clutch is not releasing completly. This would cause the grinding and the surge. You stated that the clutch is slow to return, I would look at hydraulics first. It could be hydraulics or a sticky clutch.

Just my . 02 cents
