98 5 speed oil thinned out I'm sure from driving and pulling camper got real noisey in 5th gear not just a whine after cooling down over night took it out for a drive and wasn't to bad just a light whine , I'm sure I need a replacement transmission but maybe I could drive it not using 5th for a while any one know if that could cause further damage to the transmission would like to use it for core but not broken up any thoughts from past experience ( the 5th gear and nut are in place I'm sure because of the way I repaired it a while back )

the damage is done im thinkin. driving without OD wount hurt the other gears unless theres already a defect. just bad fuel economy and lots of compression braking at high speed.

if your in the market for a completely new transmission, i've seen ford ZF's swaped in. it would cost alot more, but transmission problems would be a thing of the past. the only wierd thing is that they sit back an extra 6in so 2nd and 4th would touch the seat. if you are at all interested, i think destroked sells the parts for the swap.

How many miles are on trans? Which oil do you have in it? You can try and change it and see if you have any metal that comes out. I think you are looking at getting it repaired...

thanks for the response on this I think I will change the transmission oil and see what happens I am thinking I will be changing the transmission for a rebuilt & clean up the truck and sell it , its been a fantastic truck but the wife wanted something larger & I went out a bought a new 1/2 ton hemi I just can not afford the price of a new cummins I know I'm giving up a lot of power but I will have to bite the bullet and put up with it ( please don't ask to buy the truck it will take me some time to work on it ) thanks

I hear ya on the price. I was looking at a new 2500 quad 4x4 when I stopped at the local dealer and was floored at the window sticker. I t was $55K! It was decked out though. Makes me think I should have kept the '03.

toss that engine into the new half ton. you could probably sell the hemi for about what the parts for the swap would cost. then apply excessive amounts of skinny pedal and enjoy.

I read in a magazine about a guy that put a 12 valve into a half ton, he was getting 30 mpg and it was very fast... Looked like lots of fun!

there has been a few in diesel power. one got 50mpg on the highway. of course that was reg cab short bed at 60 and it was geared to spin just over 1300, but still impressive. it had 650 horses availible for fun on tap.
