I checked into this setup when this thread started and Alex of Car Code stated that "Presently obd2 legislated real time diesel data is rather limited. " Purchased the gateway to see what it would do anyway. I'm running a 98. 5 2500.
Using the ISO-9141-2 protocol and the default settings, the laptop will hookup with the truck in about 5 seconds. Going to the Data tab and highlighting the ALL data line and sending, gave a few parameters in real time.
Vehicle speed, RPM, Throttle Position Sensor%, and Load%. There were HEX codes for coolant temp. and intake air temp. , but I did not receive any data for them as I would have expected. The codes page seemed to work; mine showed no codes with a P 0000. I'll probably try to set a code and see if it records it and then try to clear it.
Graphing of the 4 above parameters worked fine. Up to three parameters can be plotted simultaneously. Still have some playing around to do with the software and will then e-mail some questions back to Alex.

At RMTDR meeting yesterday,I gathered that the scan software did a good job. Before I order it,anything I need to know.

I've been watching this post too. I'll be buying some sort of scan tool in the next few months. Can anyone tell us how this laptop software compares to a store bought scan tool? i. e. ease of use, information given, code erasure, things either one don't tell you? Thanks

Hmmmm,

You guys must have missed this thread from
last Aug/Sept. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/001668.html
Larry Quinn and I were playing with scanners and I hit upon Alex Peper's little toy. I built the triple combo kit and use it with my little Thinkpad on the Truck, my wife's car and my father-in-law's *ord V-10. It works but is limited in how it talks to the CAN BUS. Alex said he would be willing to work on the CAN BUS if there was enough interest.
If you do a search on OBD II in the prod accessories forum you'll find lots of tidbits.

Darryl,
I'm curious about the ECT readout. I can't get any display at all. In which register did you find the ECT? The easiest
code to set is the MAP sensor LOW code. Unplug your MAP sensor at the manifold, start the truck and wait for check engine lamp to come on. Turn the truck off, connect the scanner and read out/reset your code. I forget the exact code but it's in one of the old threads on this subject.

Mick,

On the way up to Denver Sunday for RMTDR meet, I was able to get realtime data for the ECT (engine coolant temp), IAT (intake air temp), and MAP (manifold air press) measured in inches of Hg. This was done on the Data tab, highlighting ALL data 'Send for all supported data' and then sending the request. The data does not consistantly get captured. Sometimes you'll connect and all parameters are there, other times a couple will be missing.
Cryppie found that if say you highlight the ECT and Stop then Send again that it will start collecting. He was able to clear codes set on one truck, a tps and map and another truck would not clear. May still be a problem with that one.
Give us your experiences and what you've been able to do with it. Cryppie and I both get intermittent disconnects so a little more tweeking on the COM settings may be needed.

Hi all!
Been a little slow in getting posted to the board but here goes:

At the meeting on Sunday (RMTDR) I had the opportunity to plug into a couple truck with MIL (malfunction indicator light, i. e. Check Engine) problems. Sean Flanagan was the first, and I was able to pull 5 codes and reset 2 of the five. I believe, from my limited experience, that he has a TPS problem. I also think the reason I couldn't clear the other codes was because the computer(s) were still detecting a fault. Hopefully Sean will let us know when he finds out for sure. Basically what I found out was 1. the software does work, 2. it will clear codes, and 3. you may not be able to precisely diagnose problems with just an OBD-II scanner. All in all I am happy with the product and it is considerably cheaper than the Snap-On version Terry had at the meeting (5-6K). Hope this helps!
Mike
