Got my oil report today, said that My engine shows typical wear. The only average that I exceeded was iron - 33 vs. 23 for the average. Blackstone says that iron tends to track with miles. This change had 6,400 miles on it - they suggested that I do my next oil change at this interval. This bothers me because I use LE 15-40, in hopes of extending my intervals somewhat. Not much of an extension. BTW, the engine had almost 22,000 miles at time of analysis. Blackstone stated"Your oil was run 6,400 miles, a little longer than is usual for the type, and we found iron wear above average though not high enough to show a mechanical problem. " I didn't think this was a long interval.
I did do some heavy towing in the heat, up hills on this sample, so maybe this is normal. Just wanting to hear som thoughts that others may have. Thanks,

Craig

Craig:

You need 2 or more samples with similar mileage to start to see a trend. If you just switched oil brands that could make a difference.

BWT, my worst oil samples are from short trip driving with very little pulling and arctic winter driving (ND).

Some of my best samples have been in the heat of summer, and intervals that I some very hard pulls (WOT for several hundered miles).

Also, I extend drain Amsoil and It has sometimes started out at 30+ iron for first 6K sample. Then maybe 40+ for 12K and 50 for 18K. Not 30 - 60 - 90. I dump at 100 ppm iron even though this is not been flagged for the mileage on the sample. Only reached this once.

Craig, I'm trying the LE 8800 too! With 5k on the sample and 29k on the truck, I had 24ppm iron. I changed filters when they said it was OK to run longer and to sample again at another 2k. They said it would take a couple of changes to work up to 10k-12k on a change. I don't know why! I'm a bit discouraged too, but when I think about it, Amsoil is the only one that recommends really long changes with their oil. I haven't found an engine mfgr. or any other oil company that will stick their neck out and say it's allright to go past the oem recommendations - ESPECIALLY for diesels. This is shaky ground and I'll be happy just to break even on the high quality, expensive oils. Another Craig

JJW and Craig,
Thanks for the replies.
My question now is - should I drain the oil, or is it o. k. to go another 2k and see how things are? By what blackstone says, sounds like I should change now. Is it o. k. to push the iron ppm to near 100? When these companies compare averages, do they compare them with oils with similar amounts of miles? Thanks guys.

When ever a lab say change it, I would! I have never had a engine oil sample come back with a change recomendation.

Does LE support (warrenty) running the oil past OEM recoemndations?

I have had differental and transmission samples come back with a change recommendation. I would dump and sample at the same interval then decide whether to keep running. If sample is the same you will start to know what iron your engine seems to run at. Again, mine at 6K is usually between 25 - 35.

Royal Purple recommends 12,000 right on the quart bottles. While under warranty, it is up to you to make the decision to extend past the OEM recommendations. Remember that the OEM drain interval is based on the lowest common oil that will be used, not a high end product to cover their warranty issues.
I have run Royal Purple for the last 8 years in two Cummins 6BT's (an 89 and a 96). Both were run at 12,000 mile change intervals with standard filters (no bypass like some oil manufacturer's push). The oil tests showed only 20-25 ppm of iron for the 12000 miles on the 89 truck (160 hp) and an average of 40-45 ppm on the 96 truck (215 hp).

Also noted a 7% gain in fuel mileage on the 89 when I switched from Delo or Rotella at 70,000 to the Royal Purple. I did not notice the fuel gain on the 96 but it went in at 5000 miles on the truck.

The real drain interval on my current truck using Royal Purple 15W40 and the Microglass filters is probably 25000 miles or more.

email me and I'll send you my excel spreadsheet with the oil analysis reports.
