If you decide not to fill the filter, make sure after running the engine and circulating the oil you have the proper oil level in the truck.

11 Qts total.

I've always filled the filter.

You are not going to cause any problems. You engine had nearly three gallons of oil in it. There is plenty of oil in there. I would make sure you top off after it has been run a few minutes.

I always fill the filter, it's not that much hassle. If you use fleetguard, what I do is leave a two inch length of the plastic cover in place which can be removed easily for filling the filter, then put back over the top so as not to spill any oil when manuvering it into place on the engine. Just don't forget to remove the plastic before screwing it in. :p

Oil Filter change

Captaindean,

I do alot of oil changes on the Dodge/Cummins trucks, and I always have oil in the new filter before installing. This task can be done very easily if you remove the flexible air intake hose from the turbo to air box. This allows for easier access to the filter. Then I put oil in the new filter until the oil level in the filter is about an inch below the top. Hold onto the bottom of the filter with the right hand and place it in position, then turn the filter with both hands to get it started on the threads. Once it gets started on the threads it is easily tightened. Do not over tighten the filter! I allow the filter to make contact with the flange, then tighten till it will not turn anymore. Then back it off just a little just to make sure the gasket didn't wrinkle. Oh. and by all means, put a little grease on the rubber gasket before the install.

By filling the new oil filter before installing, the oil pressure comes up much faster when engine is started. I never have spilled oil using this procedure. Just be a little carefull when getting the new filter into position.

My . 02 worth.

Best regards,

I have never felt pumping air across the bearings in a running motor was a good idea!

Is it really too much effort to put some oil in the filter??

FYI

Also take white out and mark the filter head in-line (towards the passenger fender) with the fittings on it. That way you can mark the oil filter for a reference to see if it starts vibrating loose:eek: .

I had one very loose at oil change time which could be disasterous. Also check trans pan bolts.
