I cheched out the 15 qt model that WalMart carries, but will it allow the oil to drain fast enough or ? I thought the drain hole was a bit small for 12 or so qts to drain w/o overflowing the top area. Any other ideas/options as I'm nearing 1000 miles and want to do my first oil change then.

Yeah, that hole is too small. I found that out the hard way on my first oil change. #ad
I never thought I could get a drain plug back in that fast! I did my second oil change the other night. This time I just loosened the plug and let it drain slower. After a while I removed it all the way. While it was draining, I cleaned out the blow-by bottle. That worked fine. The reason I continue to use the pan is that it works nice to transport and dump the used oil. #ad

It helps to remove the cap from the pour spout, but still won't take the oil fast enouph. I let it fill up a ways then replace the plug until the oil drains down. Messy, but it works.

thanks for the info guys. Looks like I'll just weld me a nice shiney aluminum drain pan. I guess I'll have a "priority" job here in the next week or so #ad

I use a real expensive gadget for my oil drain. A 5-gal ex-Costgo Soap bucket. My wife didn't even charge me for it. Works pretty good, no overflow yet and I can drain as fast as I want. Neat carrying handle and sharp looking blue lid so it doesn't slop over when I take it to town to recycle or whatever they do with in the back of Kragens.

Metal Tech,

I use a 5 gal. joint compound bucket. Just use a razor knife to cut the seam above the handle lip. If you are not using a drain valve, their is still enough room to get your hands and tools into the area.
I have an old backhoe so I have plenty of empty 5 gal. hydraulic containers to transfer the drained oil into. When full, off to the transfer station/dump. #ad

I have the wal-mart oil catcher and cut the certer drain hole larger to carry the heavy flow of oil. I think the hole is about 2-2 1/2 inches in diameter. It works great with the hole enlarged.

I use an empty 20 litre oil bucket. I take the lid off and it will slide under the truck. For changing the oil filter use the zip lock bag.

metal tech, Camping World sells a LARGE black plastic oil drain pan that holds at least 4-5 gallons. It's about the same diameter as an OE 245 tire with several grab handles a pour spout and a breather valve. I believe the last time I saw one it was $9. 99 (I paid $16. 95 at a 4x4 shop for mine... several months before I saw the one at Camping World).

Prior to the addition of my Femco/Geno's Garage EZ Drain, drain plug, I NEVER experienced any overflow of oil after fully removing the plug from the pan (breather valve open, drain cap on).

I use a 5 gallon pail as well and it works great. With my truck on the stock tires I use a couple of short SE ramps and that gives me plenty of room to get tools in and out without fear of deep6ing them in the pail. Easy trans to wherever you dispose of your oil too. Best part is no clean up, just put the lid back on. Don't get too many pails or you may get lazy like me and before you know it you have enough oil on hand to rival the Exxon Valdez.

Hyde,

I've done that. Not gonna let 'em collect around here any more! Yeah, right! #ad

I don't have any trouble with room for my 5 gallon bucket because I jack the thing up and put it on four axle stands. It sits all night so the quart of oil that hides in the P7100 pump will drain out. Then I have a service routine I go thru every oil change time. Tire rotation, break check (adjust if needed), all fluid levels, grease, fuel pre-filter, grease throttle linkage end balls, check belt, and look the whole works over for problems and leaks. And, of course, polish the chrome. I made a couple of low benches out of left over plywood so I don't have to let it down to do stuff under the hood. 148k+ miles on it so far.

Of course, if I didn't have a big garage I might not do it this way.

Check out www.griotsgarage.com. They have the best oil drain pan I have ever used. They also sell an oil filter "pliers" set that is great with the Cummins engine. Lots of neat ideas there. The oil drain pan takes the full blow of oil from our engines and comes out smiling. #ad

DieselB59, the oil drain pan that Griot's Garage sells is EXACTLY the same drain pan I was referring to although, I purchased it at a 4x4 shop prior to discovering Griot's Garage. Works very well. #ad

Poor boy checking in here! I use a plastic mortar-mixing tub I picked up @ a home improvement (!) center for about 2-3 bucks!

I use an old drawer from a refrigerator, holds about 14 qts and will fit under any rig. When I'm done I dump it in the tank for my waste oil fired shop heater. Works good for dog water too. Am I a redneck?

I use a 3 1/2 gallon bucket. Same as a 5 gallon bucket, but a little shorter. Fits fine under oil pan, and still room for tools and hands. It uses the same lid as the 5 gal's, but it's pretty gross so I usually transfer it to an old metal 5 gal. Kereosene can.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's let 25-30 gallons of oil accumulate. I found out our city has a free hazardus waste disposal program, they came to my house and tool all the oil, as well as a handfull of dead car batteries -- no charge!

I have one of the black plastic drain pans, that I think was labeled 15 quarts when it was new, but I'm not sure. It's a Chilton model P3. I found that unless I remove the pour spout cover it won't take the oil fast enough.

Two additional items:
1. I am amused at the warning molded into the plastic on my oil drain pan. It says, "NOT FOR USE WITH FLAMABLE LIQUIDS. "
2. If you find that the oil splashes when it hits the flat surface of the pan, buy an appropriately sized furnace filter and cut it to fit the pan. It will not splash.
