Oil filter wrench

Got to love those guys at Genos! I had the typical 03 oil filter that wasn't going to come off at my first oil change. Even bought the "special" filter wrench from Genos, and cracked it right in half! Had to spear the filter with a screwdriver to get it off. Called up Wendy at Genos and they sent me a new wrench no questions asked. Next filter should come off alot easier.

I was having trouble with the filter wrench stripping where the 3/8" ratchet fits into it. Took an old socket & welded it on. Works like a charm!

yours must have been made out of metal, the new ones are some sort of fibered plastic!? I haven't figures out how to weld plastic yet! :--)

Of difficult to remove oil filters, I used a tip I read in the TDR, to use a screwdriver and tap the top rim in the direction to unscrew, works every time without damage. On filters I've installed myself taking care not to overtighten, I still find the screwdriver method the best method. On a Forklift where the filters had not been changed for years, even using enough force to deform filter case still unsuccessful, used the screwdriver method worked like a charm. The membership dues pay off on the first tip. I'd like the TDR print a book on such tips found successful by anyone, save a lot of fustration, not counting damage and expense. Scrum Down

I have also used this method, but it did not work for the first filter change when my Ram was new... The only way I got it off was to drive a big screwdriver through the filter and pry it loose. This was a common problem with new Rams. Don't know if it has gotten better with the later ones...

i have a steel stamped wrench that i used on my 6. 5TD chevy tahoe when i had her. i tried fitting it on a new filter i have at home, it is snug [might have to fight to get it off] but it will hold it real good...

Who makes a really good metal wrench? The ones I have looked at seem like cheap junk. I have the plastic one from Geno's and would like to up-grade to something that I can trust.

That's what I used... Filter didn't have much choice... And it was on there!

I had one of those filter wrenchs from Genos and it cracked on me too. They sent me another one and it cracked too in the same spot so I went back to my metal filter wrench.

I used a strap wrench like the one pictured above. Geno's has them too. It still bent the heck out of the filter before it gave and come off.

I haven't used my plastic welder in years, I'll sell it to you and you can practice

Forewarned by my TDR buddies, I found a steel oil filter wrench. It still took an 18" breaker bar to bust that *&#%^@ loose, and the drive boss in the wrench was deformed when it was over with. The main problem is the gasket... . it was dry as a bone, and squeaked loudly for a good half-turn before it let go.



I traded notes with SOMEONE at Cummins (why don't they put their names on e-mail) who said they would get my feedback on this over to the production line. :-{}

Danny--- I read that the factory doesn't use any lube, only some kind of sealer. Must be lok-tite. I was so chicken I took my CTD to the dealer for it's first oil change . It has been very cold here since Christmas so I didn't want to lay on the ice in the driveway fighting that filter!. Toyota filter was on super tight with no lube on seal also.

I too tried a plastic wrench from Geno's and it just clicked and gave me a plastic shower, I guess I should call them about a replacement. What I wound up using was a stamped steel cup with a 18" breaker bar (1/2 drive) and a lot of effort. It was the first filter change for the truck. Maybe the folks installing them at Cummins should read their own specs.

The plastic wrench is $5 from Genos ... ... ... ..... i'm looking at $15 for the chunk of aluminum before I ever sink a tool in it.



Prolly looking at $35 minimum ... ... ... ... . should I persue this any farther? Thats an awefully expensive filter wrench, lol. Course I can have'em anodized any color y'all want for a few bucks more!

tight as a bullfrog`s arse -oil filter

Gentleman; I beleive that the oil filter is on so tight ,is that in the final leg of assembly the engine gets sprayed with a clear coat and that is what seals the filter on to the mounting flange. tapping on it should break that seal of clear coat. just my take on the problem
