I got a considerable amount of oil leaking out of a solid mounted tube on the left side of my motor, I have been running synthetic all winter 5w-40. my truck has 144,000 and its a 1998 12valve. Is this tube the breather tube? am i low on compression or could it be the synthetic oil?

I believe that is your breather tube. Did you overfill the crank case? I have 250,000 on my truck and tried Rotella synthetic for a few oil changes with no problems. Regular Rotella all the other times. I have a little tylenol bottle attached to the bottom of the tube to catch overflow and keep the driveway clean. I drain it every few oil changes. I don't think the synthetic is a problem. If it is a new issue since the oil change I would check the oil level.

My 98 12 Valve was leaking also around the tube also and upon really checking I found the Oil was coming from the Vacuum pump seal, which is common for 12 valves. I got a kit from Pete Gould and it was a simple repair and cost about $50. 00, I also killed the KDP at the same time. You can check DODGE DIESEL VACUUM PUMP REPAIRING /TRANSMISSIONS REPAIR for info regarding the vacuum pump reseal. I was getting drips on the shop floor and it appeared to come from the tube but it was dripping from the vacuum pump seal. I have used synthetic Oil for seven years with great results, Amsoil and Shell Rotella T and Royal purple. Hope this helps... ...

it appears to be leaking from both the vaccum pump and the breathe tube, how hard is it to upgrade the vaccum pump?
