My 94 Dodge Cummins has developed a serious oil leak on the drivers side of engine underneath injector pump it looks to me like it is coming from the tappet cover, has anyone had to change this gasket on ther Cummins?, how big of job is it?, thanks

Yes they have. You will have to hunt thru the archives or thru last couple years of old TDR magazine issues (you can read the digital magazines from home page if you don't have older issues.

It is a two day job. One to remove the IP and the cover, replace the gasket using sealant, then reassemble. Let the sealant cure overnight, time the IP and cross you fingers the gasket isn't pinched. Joe Donnelly posted his method a couple years ago.

I found the old post. He suggests 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive between the gasket and the cover and gasket to block.

Just make sure it isn't the oil pressure sending unit. I would hate to complete the whole job, just to discover it was the sender. Good luck

To the OP, where are you located? I had Jim Jessup do mine about a month ago. He had it done in about 2 hours. He is in IN. If you are close it might be worth your time to check into it. Jim usually uses factory Cummins parts but he uses a different gasket for the tappet cover. He laid it out and showed me what makes it better than a factory gasket.

2 hours to replace a tappet cover gasket and reassemble the engine. The BS flag is waving.

GAmes, I have followed many of your post on here and on CF. I value your knowledge highly, but I have no reason to lie about the time it took to replace the gasket. Jim and Layten had my pump completely removed in 30 minutes and the tappett cover removed. I was at his shop a total of 4 hours and they did the gasket and while the pump was out Jim put the GSK kit in and the fuel plate. I figured it wasn't worth the trouble of doing it myself later since the pump was sitting on the bench and he really doesn't charge much to install the stuff with the pump out.

I agree. 2 guys that have done this many many times and work well together makes a huge difference. They had the gasket changed in 2 hours and the rest of the time we worked on removing the veggie oil system from my truck.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread. To the OP, good luck with getting your leak taken care of.
