First off let me say I hate oil leaks. The leak appears to be coming from the oil dip stick tube where it is clamped to engine. I will know more in the morning when I can get the area cleaned up and take a better look.

Has any one ever encountered this type of leak??? To get to the tube you have to take the starter off. Also can the tube be removed without draining the oil? The type of clamp appears to be the wire type can it be replaced with another style clamp?

Or get a new tube from Cummins and replace, the best way to go?

Just my luck, we are leaving for a short trip over Christmas, need some advice.

Thanks in advance.

Jim,

Is it coming out of the end of the dipstick up by the intake? Or is it where the dipstick goes into the oil pan? If it is by the intake, it is most likely the end of the dipstick that has a rubber seal/ grommet type set up, and they get old and harden and crack. If it is down by the oil pan, you can leave the oil in it. You will have to remove the starter, most likely (I'm going by memory here, book is in the other room. Might try cleaning it off real well with some spray stuff or a rag and some dish soap. Rinse and dry. THen try some ultra black silicone around the area the dipstick goes into the oil pan. Not a permanent fix, but it may help. Worst it can do is keep leaking.

Oil Leak Update.

I finally got around to cleaning and checking area where oil was seeping and found that the lift pump gasket was leaking. I tightened the bolts on the lift pump and it seem to have slowed down alot.

I had to break down and get a gasket from the dealer, kinda a rip off but Cummins is closed and NAPA only has the gasket as long as you buy the lift pump. I would have waited for Cummins to open on Monday but the dealer had the gasket and I'm leaving town on Tuesday afternoon.

What is the best way to install the gasket, DRY or with some kind of sealant. Need to do this in the AM have to get ready for the trip. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Here's the scoop

The inlet is flex/plastic hose. It'll be ok. The out-let will require removal. One wrench on pipe fitting, other on pump coupling. Remove the two nuts and pull it off. Clean off all old gasket. If ya can't get gasket off pump with inlet attached, remove it too and scrape away.

Install dry. If you have some gasket cement you can use it, but not required as the two studs will hold it in place.

If difficult to reinstall, bump the starter over a bit to allow the cam lobe to rotate down out of the way of the pump's arm.

You can pump the primer a few times but you won't have to bleed the pump/injectors.

RamAZ,

I have used silicone to seal the pump to the block. Just get the orange or really black stuff to make sure oil wont leak by. It has worked on Mom's truck for 3 years; so far so good.

Oil leak fixed........

Well, I finally got around to fixing the leaking gasket on the lift pump. I used the gasket I got from the dealership, it has 3 layers, black coating, thin metal and then another black coating. I cleaned the area up real good and wiped down with acetone and installed. No leaks for now.

I will avoid putting any sealant on gasket surfaces from now on, if I can, removing the old sealant was a real hassle.

Things are good for now.

Thanks for all the advice.
