last summer in july I was driving unloaded about 65-70 mph in 105 degree weather. After about an hour of driving or so I pulled off the highway and my oil light came on at idle. The guage was on the first tick mark. When I rey it up a few rpm it goes up to the second tick mark and light goes off. When driving the guage normally reads at the second mark. Has anybody else had the light come on at idle in hot weather. I am running Chevron Delo 400 15w40. The filters that I have been using are WIX 51607.

Get yourself a new sending unit (located on the drivers side under the injection pump) and the light problem will go away. It is a fairly common problem.

oil pressure

 The problem with the guages are you only have a vague idea of whats happening in the engine! Hook up a mechanical oil pressure guage to it and see how much pressure you have. Sender is problably weak. Delo400 is good oil and the wix is ok too, however I run the Fleetguard and Dello. Used to run the Napa Gold which is wix, but was more confident with the Fleetguard. I've run in heat with loaded trailer and never have the pressure go down. Sender in your truck is probably due, how many miles? I know this is old fashioned, but due to carpet full of oil from a plastic oil line, I run fron engine to firewall with a 1\8" grease hose and then to the dash guage with copper tubing. Works for me. Thank you for the reply. Truck has 205,000 miles. Is the filter from mopar fleetguard? No parts store in town has access to fleetguard by name. I havent seen the light on for a while since it started getting cold. I will replace the sender. The parts stores in town carry WIX by name or NAPA (WIX), or FRAM which is out of the question.

filter

Yes, the filter from dodge is Fleetguard. You can also get them from Genos at a pretty good price. Tim

oil pressure lines

fellas -

on the oil lines (or any pressure lines) I have started using the Autometer steel braided lines, and I'll tell you why. For one thing they're reuseable. The ends are AN fittings and are a chamferred edge, which means zero leaks. Second, you can whip them around and all they do is keep working. I used to use the white plastic tubing and was lucky. Then I went up to the copper tubing and was still lucky. Always seemed to be wet on the edges after a while but no leaks. Well, after spending a little more and going with these steel braided lines, and considering how much our rigs shake on startup and shut down, I'll never, ever buy any other kind of feed lines. These braided lines are fantastic, and if you need to do some maintenance you just unhook 'em. Plus, they look *****in'. ;) Check out autometer's website and surf for feed lines - there's several lengths and sizes. I have been running all #3's (I think, from memory) and not needed the #4's.

My 2c's.

914x4, when you were driving in this hot temp, was you running the air conditioning? If yes your idle may be too low, as it will pull the RPM's down a bit. What does your truck idle at on your tach? I have no tach but I know my idle is low, when I run the AC, the oil pressure light will flicker and sometimes stay on, unless I do as you described give it a little fuel, according to my factory oil pressure guage, its just under the first mark - 10 psi-. So less than this is too low and the oil light will come on. What I've done is adjust my throttle lock/high idle control a bit so that it brings my idle up a bit to overcome the AC. Sounds like you may just need to have your idle increased to the book value with AC, which I cant tell you what it is right now, but someone should ring in and tell you. Bill

Ok, scratch the AC thought. Better follow everyone elses troubleshooting ideas. I checked on an Isspro oil pressure guage, price was about $40. The plastic tubing was about $10. Bill By the way (BTW) Welcome to the club!!! Best thing for us Dodge Cummins owners -TDR.

oil pressure light

914x4CTD just read your message, the replys are right on. I was pleagued with the same symptoms while in Hauntsville Al, a couple of months ago. I attached a mechanical unit and the pressure was very good . I bought a new switch and learned right away I needed a 1-1/16 inch very deep socket to remove the old switch. It fell apart . Then the new switch did the same thing ,no pressure, light still on. It took 3 units to get a good one. If I did not have a mechanical guage I would be in the looney bin by now. And I think the socket wrench size is correct ask others to be sure. The one I bought cost about $12. My tool box was in califorie. when your hot you,re hot. hope this helps. K. E.
