2000 Dodge - Oil pan gasket leaking. Trying to determine if it can be replaced without dropping the entire pan. Have read that it may be a two-piece gasket.

More information is welcome.

One piece

The cummins pan gasket is a single piece. If by some chance tightening the bolts doesnt stop the leak the pan will have to be dropped. Best suggestion is to break one of the motor mounts loose & jack up the engine (put the jack under the harmonic balancer I believe) and remove the bolts that way. It's definitley not an easy fix, but is very doable. Good luck!!

If its rubber one piece... can you lower the pan, remove the gasket by cutting it... then slip the gasket up the pan from the bottom... then carefully move it around to the block side? I did this on a 351W in a Bronco when everyone said I had to lift the engine, remove the oil pump, then the pan. Was quite easy really on that truck. Just cleaned real well beforehand. Just a thought.

I did a pan gasket on the '98 that I used to have. 4WD Auto. There is just barely room to pop the pan out with the front of the motor lifted to the point that the rear rocker covers are against the lip of the firewall.

The trouble with trying to do it with the pan resting on the front axle is dealing with the sump.

I don't think that the gasket could be pushed down into the pan and around the sump without tearing it, there is not enough room for your hands to work plus you will not be able to see.

You have to drop the pan, let it rest on the axle, then reach in through the space at the front of the pan to remove the front two sump bolts and I think that there is one bolt to the rear as well.

If you are careful and keep things from dropping into the pan you might pull it off without completely removing it from the truck, but as I recall you will need to lift the motor quite a distance just to get finger room enough to deal with the sump.

I would not cut the gasket, if you are going to jump in the pool you may as well head for the deep end and do it right. :-laf

JMHO.

I have to do mine also. I was told to use an engine hoist attached to the front lifting hook. You can raise the engine this way.

From a post by Andy Redmond...

Drain engine oil.

Loosen the "horizontal" motor mount bolt on each side.

Remove the fan.

Jack up motor with bottle jack or raise by lift hook near thermostat housing with a chain and engine hoist/cherry picker. Support the engine secondarily should your hoist or jack fail.

Remove all pan bolts, pan will drop. On DS of engine locate two oil pick up mounting bolts to engine block (10mm head). Near right front of engine locate and removed two more capscrews that hold the pick up tube to the oil inlet. Wiggle tube out or let it fall in the pan, pan should come out if you hold your mouth right.

You might just let it rest on the cross member, and wipe the sealing surface of the pan and block down with lacquer thinner etc.

If the gasket is really stuck the pan may need to come out for a through cleaning. I like to tack the gasket with a smear of RTV in a few areas with assist in holding it in place while wrestling the pickup tube back on and its hold down bolts. 18ft. lbs on everything we discussed. Assure that the pickup tube to block gasket aligns with the bolts or you may block the oil flow, then you'll have to pull the motor. After all you want to make it to a million miles anyhow, right?

Plan on killing a half a day if your really fast with a wrench, longer if not. Oh, I also like to clean the bottom of the gear housing and put a dab of rtv in the groove where it aligns/joins with the block. Take your time and you should seal it up. I also like the Cummins (or Dodge) gasket over the National/Fel-Pro/Fel-Pro Diesel gasket etc.

Good luck

Andy

I would drop the pan out. This way you can position the gasket correctly. Also you can wipe out the OP and clean any junk the pick-up might have on the screen. I think I got a new gasket for the pick-up tube.

My buddy who has an 06 cummins had his oil pan gasket leaking and he took out every bolt one at a time and put some RTV sealant around the head of the bolt and stuck it back in and torqued the bolts down to factory spec. I'm gonna try this see if it works on my rig.
