Probably isn't the pump, but the sender or less likely the relief valve. Pump is behind the front cover, relief valve is under the big hex nut on the oil filter pad. Gauge sender is in the side of the block just behind the power steering pump.

It's prolly the sender.

Mine went south ounce. Went to a dealer and they said they would have to order hit.

Went to cummins dealer and they had it in stock for around $15

Stuck open: low psi and will go lower as the oil heats and thins out.

Stuck closed: extreme psi and will drop off a bit as oil heats and thins out.

Did I get that right everyone?

The oil pressure senders are notorious for failure. A Dodge parts man told me that they can barely keep them in stock for the Cummins engines. I am on my second sender. It would be interesting to obtain one from Cummins and compare to the Chrysler version.

If it doesnt sound drastically different, and runs well, I'd say it isnt the pump, but most likely the sending unit. MIne aint so hot, but I can get 90psi at cold running. About 25 psi at warm idle.

What is the relief valve supposed to open at?

Daniel

Hmm... I better check my sender, it might explain the sudden lowering of operating range on my oil pressure gauge.

But it's starting to go back up again...

Had a '91 in the shop a couple years ago with a bad oil pump idler gear. Turns out the dowel pin fell out, took out the idler gear, which resulted in the pump to stop turning. Surprisingly, there was no damage to the engine as it was shut down seconds after the zero oil pressure condition. Also, there was no broken gear case. Just a damaged idler gear, and a very worn spot in the gear case.

On my truck, oil P goes to "mid gage" on the higway at 70 ish (2000 rpm)... a little higher when cold.

At idle when hot it's at the first mark.

I should hook up a real gage temporarily just to get an idea of where the numbers are.

The Cummins on the boat will make 80 plus psi when cold then settles to about 60 (could be 65) and about 25 at idle when hot. I went thru one sender already on the boat (1st lasted 3 seasons/350 hours), but it was an 80 psi system. New one is 100 psi (VDO).

for $15, I'll get a new sender

EZGZ-

You wouldnt happen to have (or could you find) a Cummins p/n for that, do you? Cummins here in the swamp told me that it was a Dodge only item (translated- "We dont wanna mess with it; it's on a Dodge. ")

Thanks

On the topic of oil gauge. My motorhome is a "puller" front engine 5. 9. Looks like the PO replaced the electric gauge with a direct line style. Any advice about this? I would prefer not having this hose under the dash that might give me an oil bath, but the problems mentioned here might convince me to stick with it.

Any opinions appreciated. thanks

dpuckett, I have a parts Cummins catalog that lists: pressure sensor (option sd9006) with part number 3912073.

" mounts in rear oil rifle tap on left side of engine oriented so that terminals are toward rear of engine. "

Catalog dates from mid 90's

I'll dig a little deeper. Don't know how this crosses to Dodge
