Just wondering if any of you have temperature probes installed in the transmission and the differential before, and then after you installed those nice looking deep finned transmission pan, and the differential cover?

The transmission pan, I can see that it would get some air blowing over it.

The differential cover, not so much, but air disturbance behind the diff case is bound to be there.

I am just wondering, IF the cost of installing those are worth the benefit? I am excluding looks, that to me does not matter.

Did the oil temperature go down enough to make a meaningful difference?

Currently, my transmission runs about 150 degrees running level no load Measured inline on the output side.
The 3rd member? No clue.

I am getting prepared to start towing my travel trailer and doing as much PM as is actually needed.

I did the diff cover for the extra oil capacity. The extra oil should allow for more heat absorbing capacity and the aluminum cover with fins should be able to transfer heat more effectively than the stock steel cover. I also would be interested to see if anyone did a before/after test as you are describing.

I can not speak for the 2nd gen trucks, but I have done this on the 3rd gen truck.

My truck is a 2008, 6. 7L with the 68RFE Mega Cab. I pull 5th wheel camper and have pulled out west with it. I have had from the early months that I own the truck installed a trans temp gauge. I used the Acu Temp Adapter on the out put line to the cooler at first. I would see temps in the 200 to 210 F when towing with this gauge set up this way. No gauge on the rear cover but used an IF gun to read the rear steel cove rtemps. Those temps would be in the 210 to 220F range when towing.

I installed the Mag-Hytec pans on the transmission and both of the axle diff covers, 4X4. My transmission temps are now in the 180F range and I never went over 180F even towing in the mountains this year. My rear diff cover temps are now a steady 145F with the IF gun when measured at rest stops.

Hope this helps.

Jim

That helps a lot. Differentials and transmissions are pretty much a level playing ground and your info is just as pertinent for all of the prior years as well.

Thank you very much.
