Question on Smarty removal

I haven't pulled mine in while stock, but with the smarty jr. on the towing setting I was unpleasantly supprised to find mine bowed and crinkled up at less than 15K. I am a farmer that uses my truck for some off road towing and driving, but for the most part it pulls trailers on the highway or goes to town empty. I have a little Mazda for the real down and dirty work.

EDIT: the pulled in filter was a fram. I know, my bad, it's only fleetguards for me untill a bhaf.

Mine did it with a smarty jr. The box is fine it is the filter that causes the restriction. Mine did it after driving in a hard rain the filter got wet. But even when stock it had pulled the gage on the air box down often.

i thought there was a article on here and in the magazine on filters and such, if i remember correctly the stock box and filter where good for stock and a bit more. i drive 50/50 in FL. change mine by how it looks or every yr. i do bang it out, got the foam prefilter on it, when i change oil or pull a sample for test. sometimes stuff comes off sometimes none does. the minder is a moron gauge. but if it is in the red everytime you go down the road, you might want to check it.

unless you run a differential pressure water gauge you won't know what you pull for vacum.

I never sucked a filter in, only pulled the filter minder in... and that was with OE and fleetguard filters.

Drilling the holes stopped the issues for me, so it was the box that was the restriction in my case. It was almost 50k before I drilled those holes, and once there; I have not had the problem for the last 140k...

Even with the smarty, I can only just pull the filter minder deal in slightly, and a new filter solved that (40k on the old filter)...

Does it take in cold air from the stock place? What kind is it? I like the looks of it.

It takes the air from the existing opening in the fender. It also has a very fine removable screen covering the opening of filter box. The Filter itself is the Amsoil "Nano-Fiber" Dry filter, which is cleanable using a vacuum or low pressure compressed air. It is claimed to have an efficiency rating of 99. 5%@2 MICRON. The metal is alluminum, and it is an INJEN/AMSOIL Cold Air Intake.

Hope that answers your questions.

I have a stock airbox with a hose going out the bottom like the psm with a AFE PG7. The amsoil filters get wet and get sucked in. Hot air hurts milage and hp. Ckelley puts on lots of miles and has tried different intakes and what provides the best milage is the PSM unit. I have read that the stock filter is okay till 400-450hp. It will work for most unless you have a lot of power. I think I'm at 400hp with my mods and Jr set on Perf and my set up seems to work for me.

Forest your header sure looks neat.
