The problem

The problem with most states is there is NO testing of aged drivers, just show up, give em a check and renew. Just like all of life some of us have the common sense to know we are impaired and some don't have the sense of a child.



My father was a professional driver for forty years+ and one day out of the blue he said "I'm done!" and didn't ever drive again. He knew his reflexs and eyesight had gone downhill to the point he was not comfortable and said NO more. How many do this? Probably not many.



Yes, there are many codgers who do not belong on the highway. There are a bunch of youngins who don't belong either.

Virginia's renewal policy is every 5 years.

With that you can renew every other time through the mail, unless you have had tickets during the last period.

So a driver can go 10 years without even having to take an eye test to renew a licence.

No big deal for a 30-40 something driver, but what about the 70-80 something drivers?



The DMV won't change the rules as all the politicos are afraid of the AARP.

I also agree with CFlight, there are some drivers at all ages that dont belong on the road.

We also had the state yank our grandfathers license after he knocked the sign out of a construction workers hands when going through a roadwork area, not that younguns dont do that stuff.

I wish all the best to people when they have worked hard for most of their life to finally retire and go see the world, but as I respect them, they should also respect others. Why leave for work earlier each day because people in front of you drive half the speed limit? I am not talking about going 10-20 over and weaving in and out of traffic, just the speed limit, or at least close to it.

I get a few people on my butt in traffic too, but at least if they pass me, they will hopefully get a ticket. Going to slow is dangerous too, not just speeding.

My biggest complaint with senior drivers is when you see one pull up to enter the road way ahead then they wait till you get up close to finally pull out in front of you.

ZEEEW I`m sorry I didn`t really mean to make it look like I singled you out. I just meant for everybody to show respect to the older people. I know what everybody is saying I`ve been their too! But these older people are doing their best and they really need that License to get around. It`s really the last of their Independence to do things on their own. So all that I`m saying is just give them break, take a deep breath and hope they turn off soon.

Years back when my grandparents were still around I used to take them out to dinner a few times a month. They always wanted to go to the same places other older people liked to eat at. My grand father used to get mad because I would drop them at the door and park a block away; it wasn’t a problem until I told him it was because I didn’t want to be a victim of one of his fellow old timers “parking by brail maneuvers".

Again,ata makes a good point about the elderly NEEDING to get around. The way our society has gotten, who has time to take granny to the walmart. Aside from the emotional stress of losing a license, dependence becomes an issue. With more families needing two incomes, a lost license is a sentence to solitary. Maybe some of us old (but not THAT old) retirees should bomb the senior tram and have a fun post-retirement.

You fellows need to lighten up on the old people. You will be in that situation some day. I guess some of you boys just have different priorities(that spell check works )If it wasn't for the old ones you would not be here. Theres lots you can learn from the old ones if you just slow down and take time to listen. When my parents got old and had problems it was my turn to take care of them(dead now). After all look how many years they took care of you and the things they gave up/did with out. Give them the respect they deserve.

I'm surounded by old folks here in St. Pete Fl and I have to have patience with them. But just as bad are the young ladies who think they're on a race track in their little imports. Then we have the pink people coming down here every summer in their mini vans to clutter up the roads while they're lost. They are literally pink. The young fellas in their slammed Hondas don't cause me much concern but the bass is a little loud. But why do our black brothers stop in the right hand lane to let their passengers out instead of pulling in the parking lot? A '74 Chevy Caprice is not a city bus. My wife lets me do the driving. She's a minivan pilot in a Durango.
