twins

How much money take a ride in the truck? What a rush. I will never forget the first time my friends father took me and my brother a ride in his camaro. It pulled the wheels off the ground and he shifted at 9700. Now that was a long time ago, but the impression was ever lasting.

Mark, nice work! I was wondering if you could answer just one qusetion..... :D and if you want to PM me, it would be worth it (no, I won't be racing you either) What does that "Apparatus" do on the HX-35? It looks like a blow off of some sort, but I was just inquiring ;)

Thanks,

Russell

Mark,

What is the flange for on the elbow feed pipe for the Ht3b? Is it for another wastegate or is that where you are dumping the wastegated exhaust from the HX-35? Could you get me some exhaust housing #'s off of the Ht3b? I have found a few but I am not sure as to what size of housing to get. PM me if you want. Thanks. Nicholas

The HT3B is the PN#196800 from Truck Pro. I dunno the size but it works.

The elbow and clamp is from cummins. Fits the early hx35s w/~2. 70 outlet. the flange that goes into the turbo itself I made. We ended up adding ~1" to the elbow.

the piece between ithe hx35 and the exhaust manifold is 2. 5x2 squaure at 2" long on a 45* angle using T03 flanges. this is to marry the plenums and provide space for the wastegate to attach. . using 1 3/4" pipe.

the wastegated exhaust dumps from before the HX35 to before the HT3B... in the elbow on the engine side.

I hope this helps. I'll warn you, as I was told, it's a lot harder than it looks;):) I'd say it was worth the effort. :D:D:D

The guy that did the welding has expressed interest in making tubes if you're interested. PM me for more info.

Mark

I can spool the ht3b w/15psi of pressure on the wastegate... that's the spring only and no boost to shut it. It smokes lots but spools.

The wastegate is a 1 5/8" piston actuated billet gate. about as nice as they get and very high flowing

I can adjust the wastegate to allow about any pressure I like. the higher perssures are much more fun:D:D:D

I need to run the hoses into the cab to tweak it a little better. I can then adjust how much pressure is used to keep the gateshut which should roughly equal the drive pressure. I have an extra port on the regulator that I could run a gauge in the cab on.

I have set it to ~50psi without issue so far.

I see a definite increase in mileage. ~1. 5 MPG based on the gauge position. I was running with the cruise on 85 so the mileage is only about 15mpg vs 13-14 before. I'll have to try to keep my foot out of it so I can get better real world readings. I just can't drive 55 though;):D

After the road trip to okla last weekend I made a much smaller mess with the oil breather than I did with the B-1. So I'd bet that drive pressure is down significantly from a single charger. I really need to get some good data on it though. It's hard to quantify the tell tale signs without a gauge.

The system is driving very well. EGTs are never over 1180* with the FMS off and never over 1400* with it set in 'Kill' :D:D I hit 25psi on the cruise control.

Great job Mark,I want to build twins with the hx35/12 as primary, the external wastegate is the key in making the HP with the little 35,with backpressure. Id love to see some pics of your setup-please.

So what you are saying is that your welding guy will make up the pipes and sell 'em to the general public?

There are a LOT of variances in turbo placement based on which model secondary you choose... . as well as if you use a spacer between the primary and the manifold..... These variances make selling just the pipes a little difficult unless you specify EXACT model #'s/dimensions/etc..... that way what you are getting will fit what you got already. It can be done... but you gotta be careful.

I like the external WG placement before the inducer side of the 35 turbine hsg. All the excess (high rpm) exhaust gases are going through the external WG (thereby bypassing the smaller 12cm² housing) and right into the secondary HT3B turbine housing.

The only thing I could see as a small improvement would be to adjust the angle of the WG's dump into the 'transfer pipe' so that the exhaust being introduced to the stream already in the pipe doesn't get all messed up from turbulence... . Introducing a liquid into a stream perpendicular to the direction of flow will cause some problems... . but this is getting a bit picky.

Again, nice setup!

Matt,

Anyone buying these pipe would in fact have to use the same turbos. The idea was that if there was a DIYer that wanted to cut some of the hardcore fab work they could. The wastegate tube just about has to be fittted to the truck. Besides the guy cut me a deal on the fab work and now he could turn a little profit.

I'm really not set up to manufacture a 'kit' but I'd like to help someone who wants to turn their own wrenches to get it done.

You could put in a spacer w/o a wastegate and use an 18 or 21 housing to greatly reduce cost. I have both of those housings and intend to test them with the wastegate disabled.

I don't want to overstep the posting guidelines so anymore questions about buying piping should be off line. I mentioned it more as a favor to the fab guy than anything else.

man that is sweet!!!!. . hey if i could just get some of my wussy friends to mess with there new trucks i could show them that it would be worth it!... i guess im gonna have to finish my twins soon ... lets go matt(holset hotshot0 a twin fest set for lagrangeville this winter... man im turboing every thing now even my kubota diesel lawn mower hahah. .

cool.

thanks

later

Mark I'm glad to see that you got her running. I'll see you down in Texas in November. Maybe I'll show up a couple days early and we can see how those twins fit on my 12 valve;) Oh what do you guys think about an electronic waste gate on the 35 so you can control the boost while running down the road? I'm thinking I may want this.

ht3b and hx35

mark: Looks nice you give me hope! The only bad thing i heard that that it was off a n14,It was common on all the big came IIIs,and afew of the big cam IIIIs,but not used on the n14. But that is not important ive got a couple of them in my shop,We dont use them any more. It,s all n14 and air research on cat,s. now i have makings for more power. Im only at 533 with a hx40 housing and a hx 35 body with a 14cm exhaust housing. Ya to many egt.

Twin secrets revealed

GREAT INFO MARK !!!!

It seems for some reason most folks with twins don't tell a whole lot about their set ups such as which turbo's/ what size/ what type of waste gates etc. I realize this is something that not everyone is capable of fabricating or even installing. But Mark's information and mostly his experiences and results are very interesting and educational to everyone. I'll have to give Mark credit for doing something which could puke itself right through the intercooler and make a big mess around a couple dozen valves.

BTW Mark, I don't mean you or your friends at Quadzilla don't know what you're doing or have'nt done your homework.

There were plenty of open hoods at the Scheid event in August where anybody could look at twin turbo set ups. And there are several reputable places where twin sets can be purchased. It still seems almost like a secret club with discreet members who knowingly smile:cool: to curious viewers.

I'll probably be the same way soon enough:rolleyes: .

Rock on Mark and keep us posted!!!
