While adding the 3rd gallon of oil during a change, I stopped long enough to start up and check for leaks before topping off. I decided to clean the grounds on my horn mounts to allow the oil to drain down. Well, I forgot that I had put the foil seal inside the cap before I put it back on the jug. When I took the cap off and started pouring, I noticed something go down the funnel. I looked in the cap and all but half of the foil seal was still there.

So before I start up again, will this be a problem. Or will it go up to the filter and stop. Would it plug the oil pickup? Even if I drain what I just put in, could I hope to get that out of the pan?

Thanks.

I wouldn't start it again, I'd pull the oil fill tube and see if you are lucky and the foil seal is inside or right there at the pump gear. If not, pull the timing cover and check again.

I know this is past the point, but this is why we remove all traces of the foil seal and plastic, put it in the trash or far away from the engine, prior to pouring into the engine.

Bill,

I just got done standing in the corner. :(

I will find that puppy before starting.

Take off the valve cover and see if it is in there.

Good Luck

Cliff

You can try this but I don't think it will help. Cliff, the oil filler goes in to the timing cover on a 1st gen. :)

Does that help or were you checking the date on one of those calenders? ;)

About a year ago I lost track of a seal. I was fit to be tied until by chance I found it doubled up in a cap on another bottle.

Good Luck!

OK. With the guidance of two of my personal Diesel Gurus (who shall remain nameless, so at a later date they can publicly say, "What were you thinking?!) I am going to ignore the lost foil seal. I drove two different diesels for a combined 400k plus miles without being concerned enough about the KDP dropping out. I figure that since I left the Navy, I don't haveenough stress in my life. This will be my thing to worry about. I've got to live on the edge!!

As the old saying goes, "There is no problem so large or complex that it can't be ignored. "

I'd have to say I wouldn't worry about it at all... it'll probably get chewed up into little tiny pieces and end up in the filter. No big deal, that foil is very soft and incredibly thin aluminum.

So some of you guys believe that a bit of aluminum foil will drop a Cummins to it's knees?

Then, on the other hand, someone once coined the phrase "foiled again! @%#!$

:-laf

That's my dry humor.

I don't think the foil will, but I know 1/2 of the spring on an umbrella valve seal will. The spring broke, went to the oil pan, where the pickup had a hole worn in it between 3 holes. Sucked it up, jammed in the gear, stopped dead. Did you know the engine (4bt) had more power than the key on the pump? It was a new engine too. They only ate the bearings and the turbo, pretty lucky.
