Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) P0237 Code and Dead Pedal Issue?

A good old friend and former fellow TDR member has an '01 Dodge-Cummins dually with about 105,000 miles on the odometer and a problem.

He is seeing an occasional intermittent dead throttle pedal and, apparently at the same time, a P0237 code pops up. He has had the CEL problem for two or three months.

When he first began telling me about a problem of low boost another friend had suggested and I agreed that it could be caused by a bad MAPS sensor. Someone else told him it could be simply a sooted MAP sensor probe and could be restored by cleaning. He was able to remove and clean the sensor but still has the same problem. I advised him to buy a new MAP sensor. He called me a few minutes ago and disclosed a symptom which he had not previously mentioned, the intermittent dead pedal issue.

I told him to buy and replace the APPS but he is on a retired police patrol officer's pension and not flush with money and reluctant to buy an APPS and find out he still has a problem.

I have two questions to ask on his behalf:

1) Does Gary or anyone else still make and sell a home shop-built APPS that replaces the expensive Dodge APPS used on the 24 valve engines?

2) Can anyone shed any light on the P0237 code he is seeing? The code reportedly is related to an error between boost and throttle position according to my friend.

I have recommended that my old friend buy and install an APPS or shop built equivalent and I believe that is likely to solve his problem. Can anyone provide a better suggestion?

Your advice and information will be appreciated by me and my old cop buddy.

P0237 would seem to indicate a problem with the MAP sensor, according to the code list. You can get an aftermarket APPS (Timbo style) from Geno's for not too much coin. I would also suggest checking the grounds to make sure they are all clean, sometimes a bad ground issue can cause strange symptoms. Even if the battery connectors and ground connectors look good, I would recommend taking them apart and cleaning them thoroughly; it's amazing how often it fixes the problems...

One can only hope he is not starting to have issues with the VP44.

Thank you for the suggestions. Hopefully my friend will read this. I had forgotten, actually overlooked the fact that the part can now be purchases from Geno's. I don't read in the Gen II forums much anymore and don't know the "good stuff. "

Thanks, Bob. Based on that and the above info it sounds like he can probably get off cheaper with a MAP sensor rather than an APPS.

I have exactly the same problem.
Occasional dead pedal, push down and nothing happens holds something close to fast idle all the way down the road. Let off all the way and hit it again and it goes.
Also an occasional dead pedal turns into a strange delayed acceleration.
I have an edge comp and it happens with it on or off, I read on another post that someone had something like this caused by the comp, that doesn't appear to be the case.
no other DTCs, just cleared the 237 which was there twice.
Can someone give some advice about how to go about checking the rest of the items listed in post #4?
