About a week ago I did service on my 2016 6.7 rfe68 4x4 CCLB. Did oil , fuel filters , ccv & transmission filters . All filters are Mopar transmission +4 fluid also Mopar. Got what I thought was 8-9 quarts on the drain .( measured into a 2 1/2 gal def jug , not quite full) Didn’t drive it immediately, sat in shop . Next day started it and let it warm up . Next shifted it to reverse, neutral, drive several times , even backed out of the garage. Checked fluid level was a bit low so added to . ( checked in neutral with truck running and fairly warm)Didn’t drive it other than back in and out of shop . Weather was not good and truck was clean so waited a couple days. Well after a couple more days I was ready to go for a road test . Backed out of shop put truck in drive &would not go forward
At that time I set brake and checked fluid level again . It still checked low , so added another quart maybe a tad more. Truck now drove forward so proceeded on a short drive. Noticed check engine light. Put truck back in shop checking fluids adding a bit more . Fluid is now perfectly in hot range ( just over 10 quarts total ) . Bought $40 OBD II to get code . OBD would not clear code. Found a old TDR post on the subject with a lot of information. One poster said he disconnected batteries to clear code . I did this and it did clear so went to see if it was fixed now (test drive) Things were good at about 10-12 miles then I merged onto interstate and truck down shifted way down and check engine came back on . Truck in shop *and I’m trying to figure out if I want to pull pan & filters again or take it to dealer? The only thing I didn’t replace was the filter pick up seal as it “seemed “ ok & the videos said it was probably not necessary. I’m thinking do it all again wife says NO ! Truck has 42,000 mi and I have Max care
It’s a good thing I don’t have to have it right now.(I’m retired) There’s a dealership 2 miles from me.
Feeling stressed
* shop is my garage / workshop

The truck downshifting to a lower gear(4th I believe) and not upshifting is trans limp mode.

At one time my truck set this code along with another code and went into limp mode. Still under warranty, I took it to the nearest dealer, who, thanks goodness, had a super sharp trans tech, he found a harness with a bad connector, replaced it, cleared the codes and all has been well ever since.

There’s a possibility your sump filter is not seated properly in the seal OR perhaps you’ve overtightened the spin on filter and have cracked it...

Yes I understand the pick up filter seating . I don’t see how it actually can’t be seated as I inserted top tube into trans seal & twisted it back and forth and being the tube is at a angle I would not think you could get the torx bolt in place if it wasn’t seated. Spin on only done to 2/3 after contact by hand. Probably gonna do it all again & with a new pick up seal installed.

Thanks for your response

Will look at what ever I can see in the way of electrical connections.
Truck did upshift ok there was a shudder once but it has done that a couple times in the past

Saw these on amazon when shopping for filters.
Always concerned about non oem parts
Mainly do to my extended warranty

Thanks

I'd still check to see if the plastic adaptor is cracked or broken. If you can even see the crack that may, or may not, be there. I mean, if you gotta go into it again, why not?

And personally, I wouldn't think twice about the warranty. If they're that picky, they can always find something.....

I agree, was going to do the whole thing over all new everything anyway.
Wife vetoed , going to dealership $265 out the door
Full service. Will see what happens. Cost me about $150 to do myself
I’m more wondering about the pick up seal that I didn’t change.
Thanks

After NUMEROUS trans filter changes, mine still has the ORIGINAL pick up filter seal.

And, the last filter kit I bought, had a metal thread insert for the screw-on filter included.

I always coat the filter neck with some transmission fluid...then give it a loving “smack” with the palm of my fist, driving it on in. Although it’s been a few years (going on eight, actually) since I’ve owned a 68RFE....the above procedure has done me well with the AS69RC also.

Ok here’s a update on the low pressure transmission issue. After getting a VETO from wife on doing complete trans service again . Took to dealership ( less than 3 miles away) they did complete service, no check engine light after about 40 miles mixed driving.
Time will tell , weather here is not going to be good for extended testing.
I have Max care so figured if things go south at least the dealership has the tool to troubleshoot.
I will say when I checked trans fluid level @ 165 degrees in neutral ( transmission temperature) it was just over the cold hi mark ?

Thanks all ,will update if problem reoccurs

Did you ask them to check on the issues you had, and diagnose the code?
Maybe they found the issue and fixed it while re-doing the trans service???
Should say something about it on your invoice.

No sir didn’t tell them anything, nothing stated on invoice . Hope to do longer drive tomorrow weather permitting. I’ve seen the transmission fluid level debate on this site as a result of a google search. Still seems unanswered

Just returned from 100 mile trip . No check engine light so that’s good. Now for the great trans fluid level mystery . Just for fun I checked level with truck not running in park stone cold 39 degrees.( it sat for 2 days) I was at the bottom mark of the hot mark hole. After returning from latest trip with trans temp 165-170 degrees as per trans temp gauge I checked in park motor running it was just barely on the very bottom of stick . I then let idle a few minutes in neutral and checked again, it was in the cold range directly between the two holes.
A while back after the solenoid was replaced under a recall. I was finding it appeared to be reading low & asked here about it . Never did find a definitive answer on this even after several google searches .
My current thought /opinion /guess is that 165-170 degrees is still cold & as this is the highest temp I can currently achieve at 24 degrees outside.
* 7 quarts were used for solenoid recall
7.7 quarts were used for filter change as per receipt
All level checks were done 3+ times
Truck was level in garage
It would be interesting to see others readings , particularly with higher operating temperatures
I don’t own a obd 2 as the one I purchased stopped working the day after I bought it & was returned. So I actually don’t know if there’s a code in the memory
