I have an unmodified 98.5 RAM 2500 turbo diesel I brought in from Oregon about 2 years ago. The initial inspection and smog test was difficult. The technician could not find my truck year/model defined in the DMV system. I eventually passed after showing the tech forum discussions about this issue.
I just passed the two year inspection but with more difficulties. The Tech said the main issue was the truck OBDII did not have monitor capabilities. He said this is the first time he saw a vehicle that he could not monitor via the port. I explained the truck was unmodified and had passed smog 2 years previously at his shop. He called the show owner and I was passed shortly later. The test results:
Computers, sensors, switches, wiring: Pass
Exhaust gas after-treatment systems: Not applicable
Fuel Metering System: Pass
Turbocharger: Pass
Crankcase Emission Controls: Pass
EGR: Not Applicable
Other emission related components/systems: Pass
Vacuum Lines to Sensors/Switches: Not applicable
OBDII: Pass
Smoke Check: Pass
The Tech did not measure any exhaust gasses. He blipped the throttle a few times to check for smoke.
The moral of the story is: Tell the Technician that the 98.5 24 valve truck does not have OBDII emissions monitor capabilities for California Smog Test equipment.
