Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) pilot bushing length

I've read the posts about bronze flywheel bushings, and I know the OD should be 1" and the ID . 75". My question is how long should the bushing be? Do I look for a particular length, cut it down fit, or what?

Seems like I remember reading this. Get one that would fit a Dodge truck with the 318 manual shift. Try a 1980 model year if they have to know a year at the parts counter. I thought I remember where this bushing is the correct OD, ID and length for use with the NV4500 input shaft nose and the Cummins Flywheel. Research this possibility some by searching on this site under "pilot bearing or bushing".

I picked one with the 1x3/4 spec out of a Dorman bin and it was the right length too-but I don't remember how long that was. Pretty easy to shorten a long one.

I have always believed the bronze bushing was the way to go as I have never seen a bad one and I used to break a lot of transmissions. The last time my trans was out I had one installed and it lasted about 9 months and is worn so bad there is at least 1/16th of slop in the clearance to the input shaft . The needle bearing went back in.

I was less than impressed with the first needle bearing I pulled out--on my previous ride. It was way toast.



Joe D. suggested the bronze bushing. So I still have a brand new kevlar and a needle bearing that came with the SBC kit.



Clutch was a little noisey for the first thousand miles or so, but I don't notice it no--about 6000 on it.

At least you could pull it out. Ours had fused to the flywheel and had to be chiseled out.

Wonder how long a bronze bushing will last. I know they start wearing immediately... but how fast is fast? I'd really consider a bushing this winter when I do my clutch.
