Does anyone use RP 15w40 syn oil? My petro LE oil has been good but it costs as much as syn oil. I'm thinking of switching to a syn and compare oil tests. If anyone is using it - have you tried other syns or even the LE 15w40. I hope this doesn't start a war! TIA! Craig

After a 13. 5k mi. break-in period (using Valvoline/Cummins Premium Blue), I tried Red Line 15W-40 synthetic... it worked OK however, I thought my oil analyses should have been better... especially considering the cost per quart. I used this oil for around 27k mi. , changing it at an average interval of 6. 7k (with the intention of stretching this to 10k IF oil analysis supported this. . which it didn't).

Switched to Valvoline/Cummins 15W-40 Premium Blue 2000 semi-synthetic... had it in for only 2k mi. (I switched it out after reading data that I didn't particularly care for pertaining to this oil).

Switched to Amsoil 15W-40 HDD&M synthetic... worked VERY well and much cheaper than Red Line. It also provided me with the best oil analysis report. . to that date...

I became an Amsoil "dealer" (to purchase the products cheaper) and switched to their Series 5W-30 HDD synthetic... AWESOME! I received by far, the best oil analysis to date! #ad
I'm staying with the Series 3000... although, I've always wondered about the Royal Purple (I've heard it is an excellent quality synthetic).

I put royal purple in my truck last oil change. I was told run 6000 miles come in change the filter and top it off then run another 6000 before changing. So where can you get an oil analysis done? how much oil do you send? what does it cost?

One of the members who works for RP told me they just got hooked up with a lab and the tests cost $9. 50. Their www site might say who it is. You buy the kits and the cost of the test is included. They take about 4 ounces. I just drill and tapped the front side of my filter base(oil before the filter)and put on a sample valve. I get the sample running and don't have to screw around with sucking it out of the sump. I haven't looked at the Amsoil site for a long time but they used to say their 15w40 was the ultimate for diesels even tho the people using the 3k5w30 are getting great test results. I've narrowed it down to RP or Amsoil. Craig

I have been using Royal Purple 15W40 for 100,000 + miles in my 95. Have been doing samples as well. I change the filter every 6000 miles and the oil at 24000. I normally add 2 quarts per 6000 miles, one for makeup and one for the filter. This system works for me.

Last sample had 15,346 miles on sample and it came back :

I've been running the Royle Purple for about 2 years. Was using Vavoline before the switch to the syn. Funny, but the first thing I noticed after switching was how much smoother the dip stick slid in! Change filters around 3-4 K and the oil at 12-15K. Have not been running samples and that is why the early changes. I want to put on a bypass setup and then will start doing the samples. The sample valve is a great idea as long as the valve doesn't work open!

If you have any seal leaks, they will probably get worse with synthetic. The oil is slicker and seems to get out a little easier.

Hi

Anybody that wants to talk RP can email me at my personal email, nitz@wt.net.

I work for Royal Purple as the tech services mgr and have been a member of TDR since I bought an '89 in early 1990.

I have oil analysis from both this truck and my current '96 5 speed.

By the way, the full retail cost of our API Licensed 15W40 CH-4 / SJ oil is about the same as those of you who choose to become dealers for other oils to get a better price. You're getting it from the manufacturer without multi-level markups.

Just switched to RP myself as I live close to a Flying J truck stop which sell RP. I love it!! First thing I noticed, besides the color, was how it seemed to quite my truck just a little. Will be doing oil tests in the near future. $14. 95 gal. + tax.

That sounds like a good price. We are talking a full synthetic here, aren't we? Heck, at that price it is just twice what I am paying for the PB conventional oil. I might not have such a fear of synthetic at that price, I could just double my interval (which I would feel comfortable with) and be even on oil costs. Better fuel mileage and less wear would be bonuses then.

Been using RP now for close to a year. I have no complaints. I will soon go to RP in the rear end(s), Tranfer Case & transmission.

I give it my recommendation.
