I love the CRF250X, but like most things, nothing's perfect.
The good;
- Honda fit and finish
- excellent suspension
- all the "goodies" (lights, 18" rear wheel, wide ratio transmission, big rads, overflow bottle, kickstand, T-ring chain, renthal bars, 2. 6 gal tank, etc. etc. )
- good tractable power with a wide power spread
- good ground clearance and bike is narrow at the pegs
The bad
- more maintenance than a 2 stroke; oil changes are more involved; air cleaner maintenance is more critical; reports of burning oil and valve recession issues. Definitely not a bike for the budget minded rider who wants to keep a bike for 5 years.
- with the twin spar alum frame and 2. 6 gall tank the bike feels a little wide up front
- tendancy to push in the corners (I swapped front tire to a Michelin M-12 and set up the race sag at 90mm and it is better)
- rads are extremely succeptible to damage (plan on guards right away)
- bike is fairly tall (OK for my 5'11")
Ultimately I believe that riding conditions dictate whether or not the bike is a good choice rather than rider size or weight; power is good and bike works well the tighter and uglier it gets. It wouldn't be my first choice for desert riding, sandy conditions or hillclimbing. I've had two AA riders and four A riders try my bike and all of them loved it with the exception of the one A rider currently riding a Gas Gas 300EC who thought the suspension was too soft (stock springs at the time) and power was light. Everyone else thought the suspension was as good as it gets and one of the AA guys used the term "magic". He said the suspension on the stock CRFX was "at least as good" as his highly modified and revalved KTM 250SX race bike for offroad. I have yet to ride a bike that takes less energy to ride. I am noticeably less tired after a ride on the CRF than I was on my modded KX250 and when your in the ugly stuff for 3-4 hours, fatigue is a big factor.
I think we probably are a little off topic, so if you want to PM me and let me know a little more about your riding type and skill level, I can probably give you a little more info.
Cheers,
Dave
