Competition Gaston, Indiana ITPA Class video 2006

Over the years, I've had a 2000 Honda 400EX, 2001 Yamaha Raptor 660r, 2000 Polaris Trialboss 325, Polaris Trailblazer 250, and most recently, a 2004. 5 Polaris Sportsman 700EFI and the wifey drives a 2004 Polaris Sportsman 600. I'm looking for a toy box - hauler, but I need to finish the upgrades on the truck first ! Still need Pyro and Turbo Gauges, and I'm holding out for the Automatic approved Jacobs E-Brake! (Here's Hopin)

Sweet, what exactly is it?

I would love to have a Sno-cat of some kind. Maybe a Tucker or a custom deal.

I will get picture of my new BMW F650GS Dakar as soon as I bring her home from the dealer!

I'll have to clean it up and get pics... I have what we'll call a 92 TRX350X

It's a 92 Honda 250x chassis with an 86 ATC 350X motor swapped in.

Is that sidewalk legal Texas Dodge? I'm assuming it is since its similar to a scooter. I'm moving across the road from work. That would make a great alternative to my truck or bike. Of course I could just walk!

Yes it's a Kazuma 50. I sold them last year around Christmas time. To be honest, it's a piece of junk but it's cheap. ... . Also, everyone I resold had something wrong with it that I had to fix before selling. Some had broken plastic, many tires had to be rebeaded, carbs were tuned like crap, etc... I guess all quads may be like this and that's what the dealer prep is for? Don't know. Mike

Mike, you deserve a hats off for your honesty. As far as quality goes, I can tell you that not all quads and dirtbikes are created equal. I bought a new Honda CRF250X a couple of months ago and I picked it up still in the crate. Since I race, I'm pretty careful to give the bike a thorough checking over, but after spending an hour checking stuff, I could find nothing that wasn't perfect. This was in stark contrast with my buddies' new "Yamoto" 80 that he bought for his kid. We spent more time fixing it than he did riding it the first weekend. You can't complain about the price, though.

How you like the CRF250X? I recently sold my '99 WR400, and was thinking of replacing it with the new CRF450X. I love Honda stuff, the Yamaha was decent but I would rather have a Honda and until recently Honda did not have anything that competed with the WR. I have considered the 250 but I think I am a little too heavy for it.

I love the CRF250X, but like most things, nothing's perfect.

The good;

- Honda fit and finish

- excellent suspension

- all the "goodies" (lights, 18" rear wheel, wide ratio transmission, big rads, overflow bottle, kickstand, T-ring chain, renthal bars, 2. 6 gal tank, etc. etc. )

- good tractable power with a wide power spread

- good ground clearance and bike is narrow at the pegs

The bad

- more maintenance than a 2 stroke; oil changes are more involved; air cleaner maintenance is more critical; reports of burning oil and valve recession issues. Definitely not a bike for the budget minded rider who wants to keep a bike for 5 years.

- with the twin spar alum frame and 2. 6 gall tank the bike feels a little wide up front

- tendancy to push in the corners (I swapped front tire to a Michelin M-12 and set up the race sag at 90mm and it is better)

- rads are extremely succeptible to damage (plan on guards right away)

- bike is fairly tall (OK for my 5'11")

Ultimately I believe that riding conditions dictate whether or not the bike is a good choice rather than rider size or weight; power is good and bike works well the tighter and uglier it gets. It wouldn't be my first choice for desert riding, sandy conditions or hillclimbing. I've had two AA riders and four A riders try my bike and all of them loved it with the exception of the one A rider currently riding a Gas Gas 300EC who thought the suspension was too soft (stock springs at the time) and power was light. Everyone else thought the suspension was as good as it gets and one of the AA guys used the term "magic". He said the suspension on the stock CRFX was "at least as good" as his highly modified and revalved KTM 250SX race bike for offroad. I have yet to ride a bike that takes less energy to ride. I am noticeably less tired after a ride on the CRF than I was on my modded KX250 and when your in the ugly stuff for 3-4 hours, fatigue is a big factor.

I think we probably are a little off topic, so if you want to PM me and let me know a little more about your riding type and skill level, I can probably give you a little more info.

Cheers,

Dave

Here are a few picture of the toys.

Check out the "photos" link in my signature. Lots of pictures there, at least a FEW of MY quad, toyhauler, and truck. ;)

I'll be headed back to Moab next month (right after the Las Vegas SEMA Show).

I had a 98 wr400 and now 04 wr450 and it is totaly a diffrent bike. lighter(+magic button),narrower,more bottom end,more midrange.

I ride with some guys who have ktm 450 exc and they like them. I have ridden them and the honda, the honda is more of a track bike not a trail bike.

excellent for dune ridding but so is the wr & exc. the wr & exc like trail riding much better.

Your right Robert because your comparing a CRF450R to the WR and EXC. He was thinking about the new for '05 CRF450X which is a HS and CC bike. I don't think anyone has ridden one of these yet. It will be a direct competitor for the WR and EXC bikes rather than YZ's and SX's like the current "R" model.

I don't have current pictures of our quads ('04 Raptor 660R and '04 Z400) but these are from our trip to Colorado with the Jeep ('99).

The first one is at a roadside rest stop off 285, in Johnson Village, overlooking Buena Vista, and the other is coming down Imogene pass towards Telluride. We got up to the summit heading towards Ouray where we were staying and there was a dozer blocking the road - that was as far as he had cleared away the snow (June. ) The banks of snow on each side were about ten feet high!
