New owner of new truck with new question. The engine must be left at idle speed for a few minutes (determined by load and speed) before shutting down to prevent turbo damage. Many of you use pre and post turbo EGT guages to determine when it is safe to shut down. As I do not intend to do any engine / drivetrain bombing, and therefore was not planning on adding the standard guages, here is my question: Can a post turbo oil temp guage be installed to monitor the oil temp? This seems to be the best way to determine if the engine has cooled down enough to shut down, as it is the high oil temps that cause the turbo damage. It would seem to also be a better indication of whether the engine is warmed up enough after starting to drive. If my very limited knowledge of diesel engines is in error, please correct me.

I don't think it would account for the heat soak that is going to happen upon shutdown. There is still a lot of retained heat in the exhaust manifold and turbo housing. That is where the coaking (sp?) of the oil comes from. You would also need to be very careful as to not effect the flow of that returning oil. From my turbo Corvair days, I know that the consistancy of that oil is like whipped butter, hence the need for a generally large ID return hose.

If you really want to get to the nitty gritty it would be better to monitor the turbo housing at the bearing as that is where the heat will be transfered from to the bearing and cook the residual oil after shut down.
