00,
My clutch seems to be holding up just fine, however, I don't really tow anything. Once a month maybe 2 to 3 thousand lbs. of cabinets on a snowmobile trailer.

I have 62,000 miles on my truck. I do not have any other upgrades. I going to order a Psychotty Air Induction next week and SPA gauges soon afterwords.

99 Quad Cab, White, SLT, 4x4, 5-sp, 3:54's, LSD, Loaded except cab lights and leather, Raven cap (cab high), Rhino liner, Stainless Nerf Bars, Stainless Rocker Panels, Tow package, Pro-flap mud flaps (Stainless Cummins "C" coming to add to rear flaps), Power Edge (my first BOMB), Valentine One, Amsoil throughout, Uniden PC78LTW CB Radio.

Things to come;

Hadley Bully Air Horns, 285/75R16 Cooper A/T's, SPA Pyro and Boost gauge, 4" exhaust system, DDIII's, Psychotty Air Filter.

Big Bob, The only thing that I don't like with the new levels config is the surging in all the levels while the cruise is on now. Level 1 has a little surge but is bearable.

OO, I am probably the kindest person to a clutch than anyone that I know. In the 5 vehicles that I've owned that have had man. trannies, I've never had to replace a clutch in any of them. The average milage that I've put on the 5 is 150,000 w/some towing. I can tell you that I haven't towed any thing with the new one yet and the minute that I set it to Hot #3 after the install, the clutch slipped. Hope you have better luck.

I have had the PE mounted on the top of the steering column for about 3 weeks now and would recommend others to do the same for safety reasons. Anyone drifted over the center line or the other lane while changing the levels on their PE? <font color=blue>

Bravo on the steering column mount relocation, I think I saw MoparM suggesting that awhile ago. Since my clutch is so toasted, I've been only using the PE while passing cars and only after I max the OEM power. Feeling under the dash for that button while in the pass maneuver is a bit hairy.

I sent a note to Brett to see if some future mod could be created with a remote on/off on the floor or shifter.

CRUISE 'SURGING':

I see it at lower speeds (50) on all PE levels. At normal highway speeds I can and do tolerate the mild surging in level I but with a trailer or heavy load it would likely drive me nuts.

IMHO, I am sure you all realize that the box is not at fault here, the power being created is just too much for the dodge cruise computer to cope with. You can see the same thing to some degree with larger injectors alone.

IMHO, It seems that the dodge computer tries to 'learn' the new power but every time you change levels it has to relearn, this suggests that injectors alone will likely cause you to feel less of the 'learning' on milder injectors. To that end, I've noticed my DD I's are fine on the cruise control when no fueling mods are active.

On the way back across the country I left the PE off for most of the time and just engaged it when passing (ah the simple fun of it!). This was more due to clutch issues than cruise issues.

Just my . 02 after 6K of cross country vacation driving with a HOT PE.

David

david is right , i moved the PE to the top of the column a few weeks ago , better location and safer , just hard to hit it when making a turn , the remote button sounds like a good idea , something like the old hibeam switch on the floor would be cool , i don't need a third leg for that one #ad

i don't have any surging problems except in level 3 and that is with 275's , and a VA , with these and in the standard level 1 or 2 my cruise preforms flawlessly , of course this is not towing ...

I have to wonder if my surging and clutch issues are made worse by using the original DD elbow vs Brett's. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

The DD elbow is more restricted than the PE's so I figure the real boost might be building faster?? ???

After some use of the cruise, mine started to behave again. In level 1 and level 2 the cruise is fine. I too have a special edge, and I don't run in "super-smoke mode" unless I want to lose a tailgater. I wonder if the cruise has the ability to re-map itself? Either way, as long as the change isn't too drastic, the cruise does just fine.
Great tip on the column mount. Gonna do that today.

Yeah, I couldn't remember who posted the column mounting. Thanks MM!

I think that if the PE came in at a lower rpm, that the surge would be elliminated at any cruising speed. I have the PE boost elbow on mine since the original install. I thought about putting the stock elbow back on to see if it helps.

BTW,Had the newest Hot Edge in for a week and no stumbles. <font color=blue>

Hmmm... . I must be missing something here because the wiring harness that came with my edge didn't seem nearly long enough to get to the top of the steering column. Maybe the bottom of the column, but that's it. I decided to mount it to my brake controller, which I had already attached to the ashtray. I can ghange levels or turn it on with out taking my eyes off the road or adjusting my position in the seat.

BTW, stick a fork in my clutch, 'cause it's done. In retrospect I should have taken the VA off when I got the edge, I think my poor clutch would have survived longer. Oh well, the smoke shows I put on with both hooked up were something to see. The other day some idiot in a rice rocket tried to pass me in a double line zone with a long line of cars in front of me - I turned on the edge and not only blew his doors off, but so completely obliderated his vision with smoke that he hung way back afterwards. The devil made me do it #ad

Thanks for all the feedback to those who have waded in with field testing data #ad
Field testing may mean different things to some #ad

Wanted to say that we hope to have some dyno results up here real soon. This would be from the fun time we had a Mech Tech Motorsports on Saturday a week back. Much of the results were near 100 horsepower to the wheels which is very strong. From my experience it is not possible to get much more out of the VP44 on a Dynojet type dyno.

articat , your problem with getting it up there may be where you went thru the firewall ? but i have actually coiled my cable under the dash , did you pop off the knee bolster when doing it ? running the cable in the crack between the column and the dash should have given you plenty of cable . .

oh and tonite i got a taste of how slow my truck WAS ... i reinstalled the original injectors ... #ad
... what a stone this thing is . with the pe boost function and dd elbow i get 24 psi with the edge OFF . with it on in level 2 i get about 28psi and in hot 3 about 36psi . there is a big seat o the pants difference ...

speaking of boost what are people getting for boost in level 3 ? i'm seeing 42 psi on a regular basis , and spikes to 44psi . i seem to remember joe donnely saying that the hx35 is out of its effiency above 39 psi ??? i'm going to install the edge suplied elbow and adjust it to a max of 39psi and see what it does at the strip once i get the 275 back from being tested and popoffs equalized.

for those concerned about EGT with the edge , if you have stock injectors its not a huge concern , tonite in level 2 with my foot buried in the firewall it CREPT to 1000 - 1100 , where with the 275's it SHOT to 1300 plus #ad

I've got the 6 speed which is supposed to have a bigger clutch. I think 650 ft . lbs is the max before it slips. Using this formula

horse power x 5252 divided by rpm

and guessing that flywheel horsepower is 345 @ 3000rpm I only get 604 ft . lbs. The lower the rpm I use the higher the torque so a horse power figure at or around 2000rpm is definitly needed.

I’ve got the ETH which comes with a 13" clutch. With the PE ONLY there was no slippage whatsoever on hot #3. No problems with the cruise control either. But with the DD III's and level 2 or 3 I can slip the clutch at will #ad
. However, if I keep the RPM's above 2000 there's no slippage #ad
. Have not tested pulling yet but I'm leaving for a quick getaway to Pismo beach today toten the 5er that weighs in at 15,000 lbs. I'll let you guys know how I do. I'm hoping that if I keep RPM's up I'll be able to pull with the PE on level 1.

I am considering creating a floor pedal or shifter button that will just open/close the power to the PE as a remote control.

Maybe a future upgrade to the PE will do this, but I don't see why I can't just interrupt the power line.

One thing I don't know is if the boost module inside the PE is passive or powered. Anyone know?? I don't want to loose that function when the PE is not powered via my new switch.

What kind of peak temps are you all seeing with the HOT PE? My SPA rarely exceeds 1250 where I have a warning light programmed via the SPA's feature set. Naturally I don't tow, but I have seen some nice hills in the last week.

David_VT

david , you need to have power as the boost function is always powered , i am getting upwrds of 26 psi with my stock injectors back in and the edge turned off , no check engine light is lit.

temps get hot in hot 3 , i have sen upwards of 1400 with my foot in the firewall at close to twice the legal limit and climbing , i am now curious how hot it got at the strip in number 2 with my foot in it , i haven't wired my lights yet #ad
as soon as i get the injectors back in i'm going to do a couple of blasts to see how hot it is getting i may need to get an hx40 to get the temps down , but i would like one with a 12 or 14 cm housing ...

I'm thinking of giving the psychotty air a shot. Reports have been all positive so far and it seems like the cheapest way by far to knock the egt's down into manageable levels.

Hey is for horses. C'mon HVAC, I think at this point everyone knows that this is the longest thread in TDR HISTORY. As such, there is no need to run the count up further and further - grow up for crissakes #ad
